The report on Channel 5 news which is the local news station here in Minnesota states that Ford was admitted for "medical tests" but apparently Ford's spokesman is not disclosing what the tests actually entail.

It's also been reported that it was an appointment made a while ago. Gerald Ford has often visited the Mayo Clinic here in Minneapolis, which incidentally is just a short drive away from me.

There have been no reports that Ford has suffered a serious stroke and neither is he in a coma.

Couldn't you just pop round there & try to find out what's going on?

I could try, I don't think they'll let me in though. :(

Let me finish work for that day first :(

I have a feeling security will be fairly tight around the hospital though.

When Jimmy Carter came to town the other week to help his son's campaign, I got stuck behind the police escort.

I'm signed off with the broken arm sustained on holiday, still managing to get some writing and freelance stuff done but my full time occupation as Bishop of Carlisle starts again on September 11th.

Here is another article with a few tidbits:

Gerald Ford Undergoing Tests In Minnesota Hospital

UPDATED: 9:39 am MDT August 16, 2006

LOS ANGELES -- Former President Ford has checked into the Mayo Clinic for a few days as he undergoes unspecified "testing and evaluation."

Ford's office released a statement saying the 93-year-old former chief executive was admitted Tuesday, but disclosed little else about the reason for his hospital stay.

The clinic in Rochester, about 75 miles southeast of Minneapolis, offered no additional details.

"No further releases or updates are anticipated prior to early next week," according to the statement issued from Ford's office in Beaver Creek, Colo. Ford also has a home in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Mayo Clinic spokesman John Murphy said he had no further information. A message seeking comment from Ford's chief of staff, Penny Circle, was not returned.

Lee Simmons, a California friend of the former president, said he heard in the last two days that Ford was planning to undergo a series of tests for various "medical problems." He didn't have details but said he believed the tests had been planned in advance.

"He does have some medical problems," Simmons, of Palm Desert, said in a telephone interview. "I did hear that they want to do a series of tests to make sure he's OK and improve his quality of life."

Simmons said he visited Ford last week at the former president's vacation home in Beaver Creek. "I just saw him and he was doing fine. He's talking, his mind is sharp," Simmons said.

Ford spent a few days in Colorado's Vail Valley Medical Center last month because of shortness of breath. In January, he was hospitalized for 12 days in Rancho Mirage for treatment of pneumonia.

Five years ago, Ford suffered two small strokes and spent about a week in a hospital.

Ford became the nation's oldest living former president after the death of Ronald Reagan in 2004.

Ford was House minority leader when President Nixon chose him to replace the resigned Spiro Agnew as vice president in 1973. Ford became president on Aug. 9, 1974, when Nixon resigned amid the Watergate scandal.

===================

Ok, I was pretty sure that it wasnt some medical emergency like a severe stroke otherwise he would have just gone to the hospital in Colorado, however the fact that he went to the Mayo clinic perhaps indicates that he has some serious health problems that need to be diagnosed. Someone said that this could have been planned in advance and that Ford had been to the Mayo clinic before, I didnt realize that since I have only been following Ford's heatlh closely for the past year or so. It could also just be that as an elderly ex-president he is just getting the best medical care out there. Aside from Reagan who had Alzhimers no other president has lived this long and with modern medicine he has better care than most elderly people. I imagine someone like Ford who is not an ex-president and doesnt have a wife would probably be in a nursing home at this stage.

It is possible he has a very serious medical condition that wasnt so much emergency room worthy as it is something that needs to be diagnosed ASAP. Bad colds, pnemonia, shortness of breath, stroke survivor and 93 years old, its possible he is on his last leg and they are just running tests to see if they can do anything for him. I doubt that Ford will live to be 100 as people predicted before with his robust health of just a few years ago and any serious medical attack (heart attack, stroke, pnemonia) at this point will probably kill him. Maybe he is having breathing problems (a sign of heart attack or stroke) like last month and he is just one step away from a likely fatal attack and he is at the Mayo clinic to try and postpone that as long as possible.

I wouldnt be suprised if he either leaves the medical clinic in stable condition for now nor would I be surprised if he dies there today. Its also a bit odd that his staff is being so secritive about what is going on, usually they are very straightforward as to why he is there but this time they are very quiet and thats what makes me think it could be something life threatening. Its possible his family doesnt want there to be a deathbed media vigil outside the hospital and would prefer to give a death announcement first and then the media can pick up on it as front page news.

He did look a bit frail at Ronald Reagan's funeral earlier this year.

Although not as frail as Ronnie :birthday::(

I must beg to differ with you on this point, Teddy; Mr. Reagan had not seemed so solid in years.

ronnie barker, that's how i got here and steve mclaren is on the telly, how do you guys deal with new personalities? sorry if i am hijacking the thread.

Should Gerald Ford die this was just added onto his wikipedia page today strangely enough.

Gerald Ford

Funeral plans for former presidents are written out by the Presidents themselves and kept by the Military District of Washington, which oversees state funerals until their death and then the funeral is performed to their wishes. Ford the oldest of the living ex-presidents, has requested a state funeral and plans to be buried at his Presidential Library honoring him in his former hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan called the Gerald R. Ford Library

So Gerald Ford will get a state funeral, it will be interesting to compare media coverage and attendence of that event with Reagan's funeral considering he was President for a much shorter period, didnt capture the public nor the world's attention as much and was President so long ago that a sizable percentage of the population wasnt even born yet. I am 25 years old and its interesting to think he was defeated by Carter about four years before I was even born! Reagan's death was a media circus as was Nixon's about a decade earlier but will Ford's death be as big of a deal? I have alot of respect for Ford myself, as a democrat he is my favorite republican president of recent decades.

YES!!! :D:party::party:

State funeral means a day off for Federal employees!!! I could use an extra day off right about now.

Seriously, I wish him the best, but I know he can't live forever.

his mind is sharp

That's a minor bonus for the man, he's waited over thirty years to see those words in print.

I just heard on the radio this morning, that Ford is to remain at the Mayo Clinic for at least the weekend.

There still hasn't been a formal statement as to what the tests are actually for.

I'm guessing we will probably hear something before the weekend. Not from the office, but from an outside source who may know something. This is the fourth hospital trip for this man in less than a year and something serious is obviously going on. Our next DL success may be just around the corner.

Certainly for him to have booked into the Mayo Clinic means there is something specifically wrong, or he would have just booked an appointment at his local hospital.

The spokesman this morning claimed that it's not unusual for him to want to go to Mayo as it's "the choice for a lot of famous people". They do reputedly have the best specialised medical staff in the country for such treatments for cancer, cardiology, neurology and transplants.

It could just be that he's had to book into Mayo simply as following up from his earlier admissions.

Guest Democrat who likes Gerald Ford

After reading up on Ford and his recent hospital visits, I have a feeling that the end of his life is fast approaching. While he is a very old man who has had a long, happy, and successful life, I feel very sad that he most likely will not live just long enough to become our longest lived president. A man who has been in the hospital 4 times in eight months at 93 years of age could go at just about any time.

I have to confess that while a Democrat, I like and respect President Ford very much. He provided this country with sensible and moderate leadership at a time when this country was sorely needing it. In these perilous times we live in now, we need that kind of leadership again. God Bless you sir!

There's no hard evidence anywhere on line. But it could be some long term condition, like maybe calcified heart valves, where his life isn't in immediate danger but they'd have to monitor and check before intervening. In which case the visits could be part of a process where they're wondering whether to operate - dodgy at his age but maybe the only option - or look at the impact of drug treatments in the hope of avoiding the operation, just guessin' here like, but it fits with the information we have.

I am just praying that no matter what is wrong with Mr. Ford that he can hang on for three more months to be the longest living U.S. President. The man deserves some credit and needs to be in the history books for that achievement. That is especially true since he was our most physically active and fit comander in chief. Roanld Reagan has credit for too many things and he should at least be the second longest lived U.S. President. Gerald Ford should get the credit he deserves!

Had a strange dream about Gerald Ford last night. Basically, it was the duty of myself, along with my best friend and his sexy mother, to take Gerald out for the day and entertain him. After some rock climbing and some escapades with my friend's mother trying to seduce him, we decided to head down to the beach. There, in surf shorts and all, we treated Gerry Ford to a day at the beach.

Just then, though, the sky and the sea turned black and rumours of a monster in the ocean spread around. Waves crashed and we couldn't avoid them, so we all got soaked. The beast was upon us, and it was none other than Cthulhu and his servants. Battleships and aircraft carriers were being tossed about mercilessly in the black-green sludge that was once the shoreline. I went to wake the old captain at the docks, and all he said was that the tidal waves coming in were "disaster force" and he crawled back into his hovel. Before I could catch up to him, the U.S. military came and blasted the enemies to pieces. Many died and the docks were ruined, but the four of us survived.

Later on, in a suit and tie, Gerald Ford was ready to leave. I shook his hand and said "you'll need quite a few drinks after today." He agreed and said that this was one of the worst days he'd ever hand. Then I pulled out a toy, which he thought was a smoke and quipped "I could use one of those too." Then he left and I woke up.

Wonder what it means? Where's Banshees when you need him? :D

This dream seems like one to remember. By any chance did your friends mother look like Marilu Henner or Suzanne Summers?

By the way - Ford rhymes with Reward and after having to entertain him for all those hours you deserve something. Call your friends mother up and ask her if she would like to go out for a cofee one of these days?

CP, I think that dream means your mind has been unalterably changed by exposure to the DL. Hang on in there and one of your fellow posters might be able to study you and earn a Ph.D.

There could be a few meanings concerning Canadian Pauls dream. The first would be some kind of fantasy involving his friends mom. She was turned on by 93 year old Gerald Ford, and you may be jealous. Ford may have come into the picture because she likes older men? I'm just convinced it involves your friends mother, Ford is just an influence Deathlist has givin you.
