Today in 1716 in Hannover German philosopher, mathematician, lawyer and polymath of a kind rarely seen since, Gottfried Leibniz died, aged 70. He's probably best known for his invention of calculus, independently from and at the same time as Isaac Newton. Those two learned men struggled for years over priority.

Must've been fun in those wigs.

On this day in 1706 Tsangyang Gyatso, the sixth Dalai Lama died in mysterious circumstances. He didn't take to the monastic lifestyle expected of him and instead chose to live in a tent where he spent his days drinking, entertaining ladies and singing songs.
