Antoni Gaudi, architect; his surname the genesis of the word 'gaudy' to describe his over-the-top kitschy designs - 90 years

Jack Johnson, boxer, first black heavyweight champ - 70 years

Did you know he was refused boarding the titanic because of his race. Surely the biggest silver lining ever?

That is not true. The word 'gaudy' is much older than that, it's in Shakespeare. Comes from the Latin gaudere, meaning rejoice/celebrate, I think.

Those A levels not completely forgotten

According to the NGRAM viewer https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=gaudy&year_start=1300&year_end=2000&corpus=15&smoothing=3&share=&direct_url=t1%3B%2Cgaudy%3B%2Cc0#t1%3B%2Cgaudy%3B%2Cc1

gaudy first appeared in written form in 1578 which is around Shakespeare's time but before his plays were first published.

I'll buy that, I was parroting what was said a few times on our American networks during the Olympic telecasts from Barcelona wher his work was prevalent. So looks like they were wrong unless it meant something different in Shakespeare's time/usage.

June 11:

Brewer of note Samuel Whibread - 220 years

Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh - 15 years

This was also one of the two huge days last year when we lost like 4-5 people of note in a single day; Dusty Rhodes, Ornette Coleman, Jim Ed Brown (I got points for him) and Ron Moody along with a couple not as famous folks. It was a busy DL day.

Shitty negotiators Wat Tyler and Sir John Cavendish didn't fair so well on opposite sides of the Peasant's Revolt of 1381 - 635 years ago.

Jimmy Dykes, winningest coach of the Chicago White Sox and great ballplayer before that - 40 years

Happy Chandler, Commissioner of Baseball 1945-1951 and two-time KY Governor - 25 years

I also got my very first DP hit with Casey Kasem two years ago, just so happened to be a fellow Detroiter.

The Queen of Voodoo, Marie Laveau - 135 years.

I have yet to visit her grave despite driving past many times. The cemetery is huge though, but I'm sure the path to her headstone is well worn.

Mel Allen, the voice of This Week In Baseball, which was the only update possible before the Internet and the four-letter network - 20 years

Was going to mention Lord John Reith, co-founder of the BBC, but I read up on him and he seems a pompous smug cunt, so I'll pass.
