msc 18,479 Posted June 23, 2016 Slovakia have qualified for the last sixteen of the Euros, and face Germany. In the qualifying for Euro 2000, Slovakia came close, but not close enough, losing out to Romania and Portugal. Instead of being in Holland that summer, the then top scorer in Slovakian football history, Peter Dubovsky, went on holiday to Thailand with his fiancee. The day before the Euro 2000 Quarterfinals started, he decided to take an extra step forward to take photos of a waterfall near Ko Samui. A keen photographer, Peter wanted to get the best perspective possible of the spectacular Na Muang waterfall on the island of Koh Samui. But he slipped and fell. The hard impact against the rocks below and the delay in the arrival of rescue services meant that the player’s life couldn’t be saved. “I want to go home” were his last words to his brother Ivanov. Slovakia have never forgotten him. Dubovský is considered one of the footballers who did the most to lift the country during the mid-90s when it was setting out as an autonomous state, now independent of Czechoslovakia. Since the year of his passing the Slovak Football Association (SFA) annually recognize the country’s most promising player with a distinction in Dubovský’s honour. Several members of the current side who will be taking on Spain in Oviedo, such as Marek Hamšík, Miroslav Stoch and Robert Mak have been presented with the Peter Dubovský Award – which also includes a national team shirt with Dubovský’s name and number on the back as well as a commemorative biography of the player’s life. Just a wee anniversary note for a long forgotten player. What a way to go.
