- Prince appeared on TV twice: a Muppets Tonight episode in 1997, and a 2014 episode of New Girl (which was the lead-out program following Super Bowl XLVIII).

- Prince died from a fentanyl overdose. He was cremated and his ashes were placed in a 3D-printed urn shaped like his mansion.

- Prince sang "1999" 17 years before 1999, and died 17 years after that year.

Kukai died on this day 1188 years ago, aged 60.

- Kukai came from a rich aristocratic family said to be a cadet branch of the Ōtomo family.

- Kukai became a Buddhist monk, and published his first work in 798: Sangō Shiiki, an allegorical story explaining how he believed Buddhism was superior to Confucianism and Taoism.

- In 804, he went to China on a state-sponsored trip, where he was introduced to Esoteric Buddhism. He returned to Japan in 806, having learned Chinese calligraphy and the Sanskrit language.

- Kukai established a temple at Mount Koya in 816 after Emperor Saga allowed him to. It was consecrated in 819, but he was unable to practice his teachings there as he became involved in politics (as an advisor to the secretary of state).

- Kukai was known for refurbishing the Manno Reservoir in 822.

- Kukai would continue to gain influence in Japanese Buddhism, becoming an overseer of state rituals in 827.

- Kukai established a school in (what is now) Kyoto in 828, opening it to people from all social statuses.

- Kukai published a very long work in 830 called the Jūjūshinron, AKA the Treatise on The Ten Stages of the Development of Mind.

Alferd Packer died on this day 116 years ago, aged 65.

- Packer was born in Pennsylvania and moved west throughout his childhood- first to Indiana, then Minnesota.

- Packer then became a soldier for the Union during the (American) Civil War, but was honorably discharged due to his epilepsy. He moved to Iowa, where he reenlisted, but was discharged again in 1864.

- Packer continued to move west to Colorado and Utah in search of gold. In 1873, he and nineteen other men set on a journey to modern-day Breckinridge, Colorado, after hearing of a massive gold deposit there.

- During the winter, food became scarce, causing packer and his group to survive off of horse feed. They found a Ute settlement in January of 1874, and the chief allowed them to stay until the snow began to melt.

- Packer and five others would soon split off- Packer was the only one to emerge from the mountains alive. People became suspicious due to him having possessions of the missing men, and he confessed to eating his groupmates after they died of starvation; Packer said the second-to-last survivor, Wilson Bell, killed one of the group and was set to kill him next, and he killed them in an act of self-defense.

- Packer soon escaped from police captivity and spent nearly nine years in Wyoming before being found- he then stated that Bell had killed everyone else while he told him to look for food.

- Packer was put on trial and given the death sentence; this was reversed due to an ex post facto law. Packer would then be sentenced to 40 years imprisonment for voluntary manslaughter- he ended up being paroled in 1901.

- Packer has since gained a cult following among Coloradans. Most notably, Trey Parker and Matt Stone made a satirical and intentionally inaccurate film based around him in 1993, called Cannibal! The Musical:
