time 8,592 Posted November 26, 2020 If you've ever wondered why Chicago's airport (KORD) is named O'Hare, wonder no more. Its after Edward "Butch" O'Hare, a US Navy pilot, killed 77 years ago, on the evening of 26 November 1943. He was leading the first ever Navy night-time aircraft-carrier launched attack on Japanese bombers. His Grumman Hellcat was caught in the crossfire between Japanese & US forces. His body was lost at sea and he was declared dead a year after being shot down. On 19 September 1949, Chicago's Orchard Depot Airport was renamed O'Hare in his honour. Interestingly, his father, Edward J O'Hare, aka Easy Eddie, was a lawyer who worked for Al Capone (hence the Chicago connection), and later was instrumental in getting Capone convicted for tax evasion. He was shot & killed a week before Capone's release from prison.
