As mentioned a while ago, I'd really like to see at least one of the 1970s/80s great TV detectives on the list next year. Most of 'em are starting to get up there in years. Although I'd LOVE to see Angela Lansbury on the list, and although she is over 80, she seems to be in pretty good nick - she had to have some sort of knee-replacement surgery this year so maybe she's starting to unravel at the seams a bit, but I reckon she's still got a few years left in her. In which case I say: let's have another made-for-TV Murder She Wrote feature length extravaganza Ang, and we'll see you here in a few years' time.

 

Peter Falk is climbing up the years but is, apparently, as fit as a fiddle.

 

Andy Griffith, however, might be worth considering. Here's his IMDB bio. He's had Guillain-Barre Syndrome, his son died a few years ago, and in 2000 he underwent a quadruple bypass (must be all that ukelele playing...). Maybe his 80th birthday will tip him over the edge?

That's not too promising. We'd better leave Matlock for another year, I think.

My suggestion would be Jean, the former Grand Duke of Luxembourg. His wife passed away last year and HRH looked extremely frail at the occasion. He's also 84 years old and not getting any younger.

Quite. When I was googling him a few months ago I came across an article (which I can't find now, gawddammit!) about how Peter Falk recently was attacked by a dog, and not only did he survive pretty much without a scratch, he and his wife have now adopted the dog.

 

I'd say he'll be around for a while.

With regard to DvD, I don't think he should be ruled out. If I were in the DDP he would be my wildcard. I think he deserves serious consideration for the 2006 list - let's not forget the quadruple bypass and the dead son. I don't think being over 80 should be the overriding decision making factor which governs who gets selected.

Yes, you're absolutely right. I was, of course, meaning to refer to Andy Griffith. With all these TV detectives running round in my head, sometimes it's hard to keep them all straight. DvD appears to be a pillar of health at the mo.

Those are the ones that we've discussed and not shut down that will most likely end up on my DDP. With any deadpool, I try to make it 75% rational choices and 25% intuition/feeling just to spice things up. DL, I feel, should be 100% rationality, which is why I cut out a lot of my more questionable candidates. Then again, it's all up to GR, but there's a short list for him to look at/debate.

 

I'll try and make something more comprehensive later, since I think there have been a lot of great suggestions that are more suitable to a 50 person game.
