The Cardinals Of The Roman Catholic Church

Recommended Posts

Well here's an updated version of Drol's list, as 6/10 of the original list died are now dead in under 14 months. Pope Benny not included, if he was he'd be on the fifth place.

1. Jozef Tomko (1924-2022)

jozeftomko.png.6ecc39c97390b66864dbcd74741887c8.png

Health: Now the oldest cardinal at 98 still in good health, able to stand and walk without aid but sounds slightly frail.

2. Alexandre do Nascimento (1925-2024)

alexandredonascimento.png.34224f1d7d56140ed39ae7adc76d10cb.png

Health: Seems to be doing pretty well, actually. (For a 97-year-old). Obese and walks with a stick.

3. Estanislao Esteban Karlic (1926)

estebanio.png.098bdd684b277b40ead5a62f5a9229c0.png

Health: Frail and needs aid walking but still sharp and hasn't declined much during the last year. Picture taken a few days ago.

4. Emmanuel Wamala (1926)

wamala.png.9112f09a140558fc18be951a5d766ad7.png

Health: Hospitalised repeatedly a few years ago, rumored dead last month and before that in February. Looks very bloated in that picture from the 13th of May, frail.

5. Julio Duarte Langa (1927)

julioduarte.png.48312178da1ffbc14ab949d20ac4b10a.png

Health: I have no idea, I can't find anything recent about him. Either incredibly low profile or he's been ill for years.

6. Friedrich Wetter (1928)

friedrichwetter.png.2233d3960580dce593290004f54fb6c9.png

Health: Frail? Rarely appears in public.

7. Ernest Simoni (1928)

ernestsimoni.png.351d8a2c2feb8c992416dad44146e2fc.png

Health: The "Living Martyr" of Albania seems to be doing fairly well, obese but able to walk without aid and gives long speeches.

8. Walter Brandmüller (1929)

brandmuller.png.bf0262f1d5f42d3c9c40cebbab900e14.png

Health: Seems to be doing fine, but another one who quite rarely appears in public.

9. Michael Michai Kitbunchu (1929)

kitbunchu.png.6f1cdb3d59f0d011ecfd14f1084b640c.png

Health: Has been frail and unable to talk clearly for a few years.

10. Adam Joseph Maida (1930)

maida.png.c284f9111d17d91301cd5d032532d995.png

Health: Frail, obese and completely unrecognizable from what he looked like around a decade ago.

A year ago the youngest in the top 10 was 94. Now the youngest on the list is 92.

Here the full list on Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardinals_created_by_Francis#27_August_2022

No one of the non elector cardinals will appear among the 'oldest top 10' (four of them are born in 1942 and one in 1941); from 27th of August we will have the youngest living cardinal: Italian Giorgio Marengo is botn in 1974.

We will also have the first ever created cardinals from Tirmor Est (Virgílio do Carmo da Silva, born in 1967), from Singapore (William Goh Seng Chye, born in 1957) and from Paraguay (Adalberto Martínez Flores, born in 1951).

Claudio Hummes - most popular of the South Americans, who was once very liberal but toned it down to conform when JP2 gained power. (Was the leading South American contender for Pope in 2005.)

Claudio, with a chance of death. Claudio Hummes has died aged 87.

Only three living from drol's original list posted in April 2021: Nascimento, Karlic and Wamala.

Nascimento is now the oldest cardinal, but for how long? (And the last cardinal who was too old to vote in the 2005 conclave)

Cardinal Wamala five days ago:

wamala.png.fa4068d7ef41a91ef8168ea2289e9998.png

His hands and face seem very bloated.

Out of the cardinals, who are known to be ill/very frail? Julius Darmaatmadja was already too ill to attend the 2013 conclave. Severino Poletto?

Ex-cardinal, pedo Theodore McCarrick looked very frail a year ago. Luis Héctor Villalba and Duarte Langa rarely appear anywhere but I have no idea if they're actually ill.

Suprised, thought he'd live, atleast a while longer as he was only 63.

Cardinal Wamala recently celebrated 28 years as cardinal. Yes, half of his face and his hands are swollen (the usual) and he seemingly can't hold a knife properly but otherwise looks fine and seems to be able to walk better than Pope Francis.

Michael Michai Kitbunchu made an appearance this month and, suprisingly, looked great. I don't have an image but it's on facebook, seems to be able to walk without aid outdoors.
