On life support. Apparently unvaccinated, but I'm not sure it would have saved him anyway.

Inevitable but at least he got nearly 96 full years of life unlike many who get buggered by COVID.

I make that 4 cardinals who have died from the virus now; Jose Falcão (95), Jorge Urosa Savino (79), Christian Tumi (90), and Eusébio Scheid (88). Willing to bet there have been more and their cause of death wasn't detailed with news of their passing.

Tumi didn't die of COVID IIRC.

He appears on the List of deaths due to COVID-19 (wiki), and that's what I went off of by tapping in "cardinal" in the search function.

Now that I look, you may be right. The news reports I can find just say "from an illness", so perhaps it was rumoured online or maybe it appeared in initial reports then it was contracted?

I don't think there were ever rumours he died of COVID. Inclusion in that list is waaay too vague, not even a reference is needed.

Here you go. Shame, he seemed an easy going person, most cardinals take themselves way too seriously.

Cardinals dying at a good pace, while the Ayatollahs are virtually reporting no damage. And mind, two of them are over 100, whereas the oldest cardinal is "only" 97.

I was aware of the existing link. I was actually making the point that all posters should share a link/source when they're announcing a death.

Anyway... just 2 cardinals still alive who were too old to vote in the 2005 conclave:

*Józef Tomko (b. 1924)
*Alexandre do Nascimento (b. 1925)

Angelo Bagnasco, Italian, born 1943, has been the subject of death threats for the past few years, including bullets in the mail. The police take them seriously enough that he was assigned a bodyguard. He could no longer say mass in his own church at one stage, due to the death threats.

Bagnasco is a hardline conservative and in much favour with Ratzinger. He is a rising star and there is a growing possibility that he may be a future pope (he is engaged in a political war against the other rising star, Angelo Scola, who is apparently a much poorer communicator. So far Bagnasco is winning the war quite easily.) He is extremely political and a pro-war, pro-military figure so not much reference to the "Prince of Peace" there.

The death threats allegedly came from gay rights activists after Bagnasco compared them to paedophiles and incestuous people. :D Such tact! Then again, the inner curia are experts on issues like paedophilia...

Anyway, his predecessor in his role as head of the Italian Episcopal Conference, the powerful Vatican politician Cardinal Camillo Ruini, was deeply concerned about the death threats so they were taking it fairly seriously. Don't know how much things have quietened down since then.

Article from at time of the start of the scandal and first death threats:

http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/pop...o_gay_marriage/

http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/ita..._genoa_prelate/

Might still be a possibility since these threats were obviously more than just an anonymous letter or two. I wonder if there still much anger out there after a few years or if he is likely to mouth off again on this or other issues in the future, stoking the fires...

https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/249165/cardinal-bagnasco-hospitalized-with-covid-19-after-international-eucharistic-congress

Hospitalised with covid, however vaccinated.

Longest serving cardinals include (before 1990):

Since 2nd of February 1983: Michael Michai Kitbunchu (b. 1929), Alexandre do Nascimento (b. 1925) and Thomas Williams (b. 1930)

Since 25th of May 1985: Paul Poupard (b. 1930), Jozef Tomko (b. 1924), Friedrich Wetter (b. 1928) and Francis Arinze (b. 1932)

Since 28th of June 1988: José Freire Falcão (b. 1925), Eduardo Martínez Somalo (b. 1927) and Alexandre José Maria dos Santos (b. 1924)

They've been dropping like flies recently. All of these died in August and September.

1. Albert Vanhoye (1923) :dead:

image.jpeg.302a3081ce001a76dbb9e2afaf1c3334.jpeg

Health issues: apparently fine. He is a scholar who never held any diocese.

2. Jozef Tomko (1924)

image.jpeg.69e95823a18593a1dfbec3b164cb1d47.jpeg

Health: very good health, still able to stand and walk unaided.

3. Alexandre José Maria dos Santos (1924 or 1918) :dead:

image.jpeg.0059b6cf34f774e0452190316f81b799.jpeg

Health: tragic! Confined to a wheelchair for years, unable to speak, utterly frail. According to Mozambican articles he celebrated his 103rd birthday last month.

4. Alexandre do Nascimento (1925)

image.jpeg.a29d2683adc807b1ca8f447bbecb30e8.jpeg

Health: bad. Obese, unable to walk unaided and overall very frail.

5. Francisco Alvarez Martinez (1925):dead:

image.jpeg.8b9e9bff80f53f288067a2aedcb7f0fc.jpeg

Health: in fine nick till some years ago, seems to have deteriorated recently.

6. José Freire Falcao (1925) :dead:

image.jpeg.dc82cbf16c62914f9b9486b031b2cd83.jpeg

Health: very frail.

7. Estanislao Esteban Karlic

Saludo de los obispos en el 95° cumpleaños del cardenal Karlic | Cuestión Entrerriana

Health: quite frail, but not tragic.

8. Luigi De Magistris (1926)

image.jpeg.6590f4bf89722d9770b1b8b1c6a34473.jpeg

Health: was already sick in 2010. Must be bedridden now.

9. Agostino Cacciavillan (1926)

image.jpeg.dd58a476998f0e84399b914b8720d4d0.jpeg

Health; mentally sharp, able to walk with a cane, overall very good.

10. Emmanuel Wamala (1926)

image.jpeg.41dfe569a9e22ca8bdc42abb2b0d5093.jpeg

Health: how is this guy still alive? It was a continued hospitalization for him two or three years ago. His successor died last week. Uberfrail.

After less than a year, it's almost time for a new 'top 10' of the oldest living cardinals.

Emmanuel Wamala has just been killed off on his Wiki page. Doesn’t look like vandalism either.

Can’t find anything elsewhere.

This article states he was unable to attend the Jan 25th installation of a new archbishop due to failing health. Also mentions his last public appearance was in Nov 2021. Says that he is "well and sound", which sounds like a bit of a contradiction to me. Months rather than years left would be my guess.

They published a picture to deny his death the other day and he does not look too bad.
