Reports on social media that philosopher Daniel Dennett, one of the leaders of New Atheism, has died. https://x.com/jfgariepy/status/1781368394161213505?s=46&t=Em1VIf8zUlgnB317CmgKkQ

Richard Dawkins still going on a worldwide tour but he's 83 and had a stroke a few years ago. Out of the big four, there will only be Sam Harris left soon and he's the youngest by some margin.

It is an absolute rout of philosophers lately.

So add Charles Parsons to the list of the deceased, American philosopher and Professor Emeritus at Harvard: https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/name/charles-parsons-obituary?id=54926563 and https://leiterreports.typepad.com/blog/2024/04/in-memoriam-charles-d-parsons-1933-2024.html

Chen Junwu visited this month. Permanently hospitalised, his physical condition is so bad he can't pose for photos (probably hooked up to machines considering how some months ago they visited Wang Xiji who was described as "healthy" despite being very frail, having discolored hands and a nasogastric tube) and apparently unable to talk

To be continued later - lots of future centenarians there. CAE should have much less nonagenarian members especially after half of them died from covid in December-January.

Dai Lixin dead at 99.

Chinese pathophysiologist Wang Zhenyi, who will turn 100 later this year and was labelled many times as indestructible on these forums, was on oxygen at his last birthday, which is never a good sign at that age.

Dosmukhamed Kshibekov (CHEL). Last year he jointly won the WTFAT award as a Kazakh Geologist. This year, the Russian Wiki link I was sent called him a Kazakh Philospopher, but also calls him “Dosmukhamed Krzybekov” at one point, so I’m fucked if I know what is going on.

Dosmukhamed Kshibekov, a rejected Hares pick and "major propagandist of science" as the obituary says, has died at 99

Thanks for picking that up. Having read through the obituary, I am entirely happy with my decision to reject him.

Wang Xiji, one of China's greatest aerospace engineers, pictured on his 103rd:

On oxygen now, no nasogastric tube.

Edit: Looking at that image from his last birthday, he seems much better. There he seemed barely conscious with his hands looking like a bad case of peripheral cyanosis.

With the death of Zhou Guangzhao, only two scientists from the "Two Bombs, One Satellite" program are alive: Wang Xiji (1921) and Sun Jiadong (1929).

Wang has been in extremely failing health for years, don't know about Sun, but he has not shown up in a while.
