It's Grim Reaping Up North

Recommended Posts

This is a thread for all things northern, roughly from a line running across north Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Cheshire (not sure about Staffordshire), up to the border with Scotland and spitting distance of Lady Grendal.

A lot of stuff here will be inevitably discussing God's own country but there will be room for the odd Scouser, Mancunian and those with three heads who live in the shadow of Sellafield. No piss-taking from southerners will be tolerated and neither will any post from shite posters. Instead we'd like to promote the discussion of wholesome northerness - anything on pies, pork products, gravy and traditional puddings, ferrets, fish and chips, Hartlepool, ckrickit, decent beer and dry stone walls, and those sons and daughters of the north who are not getting about as well as they used to do - such as Dicky Bird and the Duchess of Devonshire.

Aye well, we could debate where the north starts. But I would have thought that Alan Sillitoe and D H Lawrence could have had a fair claim to be northern even though they were born technically in that grey amorphous indistinct area called the Midlands.

Dora Bryan is an obvious one, Eileen Derbyshire is also rumoured not to be in the best of health and I've had Helen Forrester on my DDP for years but she still seems to be plodding along.

Aye, well, ah'm gonna like this thread summat chronic, eh?

But, content wise, it'll only make sense if we find a few who don't belong anywhere else. Local govt, police chiefs or notables with a northern track record.

Might I suggest keeping an eye on Baron Campbell- Savours? For all the posh name and pedigree he was Labour MP for Wukkie for years and his current semi-retirement came about after he battled cancer.

One who may be alive is Peter Falconio. Great northern name...well, he is/was from Huddersfield and only happened to be studying in Brighton. Despite being convicted of his murder Bradley Murdoch is now claiming Falconio is alive and well is Australia.

This might also be a better place than the Ian Brady thread to keep an eye on Winnie Johnson, ailing mother of missing Moors Murderers victim Keith Bennett. News page was refusing to load last time I looked.

She should not be placed on the official DL unless people want to risk an angry media backlash and scores of people coming on heaping abuse (more than usual)

I promise to take a break, stop whoring this thread and let it find its own level (or die) after this but...can I suggest

is our unofficial anthem?

Jim Fearnley, legendary brewer who set up the brewery in Hesket Newmarket, died on 4 Aug.

Though, the hive of industry that is Hesket Newmarket continues to brew.

Whoever is the admin of the Searching for Keith forums has been keeping a steady health update on Winnie Johnson:

Highlights:

-October 2011 - Tumor is shrunken from treatment, good prognosis.

-March 2012 - Back in hospital with a water infection and dizzy spells. Kept in hospital for observation.

-April 2012 - Cancer returns, Chemotherapy is stopped as it will apparently now do more harm than good. Johnson is reported to be suffering from moments of confusion, doctors report she "will not get better."

-May 2012 - Confusion worsens, cannot remember if Keith was ever found and buried or how long he has been dead. Johnson apparently has a heart condition.

Johnson is sent home, but admitted back into the hospital on the 26th after falling in her home.

-June 2012 - Johnson is back home, sleeps most of the day. Heart and lung scans show no major concerns.

Looks like +7 points for DDT, OoO, Windsor, myself, and 9 others soon :champagne:

Jackie Charlton was looking a bit fragile when he was trotting along gamely with the Olympic torch in Newcastle upon Tyne. I know he fell and broke his hip earlier this year and he also seems to have a great zest for being alive but he is 77 and getting on a bit.

His brother Bobby is a few years younger and I don't know his state of health but he could be another Likely Lad.

Bobby is in fine shape for a former smoker. Never had a cartlidge operation during his playing career and the unfeasibly (for his generation of footballers) good condition of his bones allowed him to stay active, play charity games etc, long after others had stopped. Barring summat sudden, like a heart attack, he's got years left in him.

Bradford Jesus Man, aka Geoff Brindley, is critically ill and in hopsital following a stroke. He would definitely get a UK obit as he's certainly a true legend in Yorkshire.

Dead. http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/local/localbrad/13622663._Bradford_Jesus_Man__dies_in_hospital_after_fall_at_home/

Who's up for nipping round in a few days and checking if his tomb is empty?
