Gordon Hunt died Monday at his home in Los Angeles of complications from Parkinson’s disease. He was 87.

Born in Sherman Oaks in 1929, Hunt worked in New York before landing at the Mark Taper Forum in L.A. as the theater’s casting director. He was later hired by Hanna-Barbera and worked for a decade as the voice director during the studio’s frenetic days as the king of animation TV. He worked on “The Jetsons,” “The Smurfs,” “Scooby-Doo,” “The Flintstones” and more.

He also directed television sitcoms, including episodes of “Frazier,” “Suddenly Susan” and “Mad About You,” the long-running NBC show for which his daughter won four Emmys. He won the Directors Guild of America Award in 1996 for his work on a 1997 episode, “The Birth.”

The 1956 version of "Around the world in 80 days" was on. I was looking at the staggering roll call on Wikipedia. Out of all those stars only two are still alive. Shirley McLaine and Glynnis Johns.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Around_the_World_in_80_Days_(1956_film)

The other week, I looked at Gigi. As far as I could tell, only Leslie Caron and a handful of extras who were in uncredited roles, still survive.

I'd say that the Golden Age of Hollywood will be entirely dead in 20 years maybe. There are few kid stars left and a hand full of "new" stars whose career started in 50's. I wouldn't count 1956 and after as a part of Golden Age, it is but not for those whose career started then. Although they say that only people whose career started before 1950 counts (and a few individuals who had a notable run of success after 1950).

Yes, I'd say Leslie Caron is one of those key transitional figures from this period. She came onto the scene as a youngster in the 1950s (which is the reason why she is one of the few from back then still around now) and had lots of links with "Old Hollywood": she starred alongside Cary Grant, Maurice Chevalier, Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire and was good mates with Judy Garland. However, she then has links with "New Hollywood" as she had an affair with Warren Beatty and has worked with modern day actresses like Judi Dench and Naomi Watts. So, yes, you are probably right to identify that era as the crossover.

Might possibly be worth putting June Lockhart in this thread as she was born in 1925 and had mimor roles in a number of classic Hollywood films such as an early version of A Christmas Carol and Meet Me in Saint Louis. She didn't really become a household name until playing the mothers in Lassie and Lost in Space in the 1950s/1960s though wh8ch might be a bit out of your time scope. Has appeared in virtually every Yank television show since then.

Oh, June Lockhart. Had her in my 2015 Shadow List, and then forgot she existed.

Speaking of Leslie Caron, her life has been a bit rougher than I expected. First of all, she had a lucky escape from Charles Manson:

"Forty years ago, Caron and her husband, film producer Michael Laughlin, were looking for a place to live in Hollywood. They settled on a cottage in Cielo Drive, the former home of Doris Days son, musician Terry Melcher. But, when she and Michael arrived at the property expecting to snap it up, they found Roman Polanski on the doorstep. He told them: Youre 24 hours too late. Sharon and I moved in yesterday.

Sharon was Polanskis wife, actress Sharon Tate. Shortly after this encounter, the heavily pregnant Tate and four others were brutally killed at the cottage. The killers were female acolytes of the insane, would-be rock star, Charles Manson. To begin with, Caron recalls, the anger of Manson was directed against whoever lived in that house. Manson had gone there when it still belonged to Terry Melcher asking Terry to record him. Terry, who could be arrogant, threw him out. Manson carried this grudge and gave orders to his girl followers to murder whoever was in the house. It could easily have been Caron."

Secondly, she hit the booze badly and tried to commit suicide. She ended up going to AA for ten years. (No wonder she lauded "The Night They Invented Champagne then!)

... All that, and having an affair with Beatty, and she is one of Hollywood's more clean-cut stars!

UPDATE: She also suffered malnourishment and anaemia in WW2.

That house should've been burned decades ago. Probably the darkest house in that part of US. I read about it and it creeps me out. So many celebrities lived there and it was stained by the Mansons....I usually don't freak out on stuff like that but I stopped reading about that house. It felt like someone's watching me.....weird.

Barbara Hale, American actress, has died aged 94 according to her son.

Wow....had no idea she was even alive. Or anyone from Perry Mason show for that matter. Guess I can carry on living under that assumption again.
