In an attempt to circumnavigate this discussion back to being somewhat on topic, I "play" (read make noises on) the electronic keyboard. I'd like to reiterate that it is not a fucking piano.

The piano keys are the same, but there are other buttons on the keyboard that can make the keyboard sound very different, so it's not the same at all. It's much more complicated than an actual piano.

I think you've misunderstood the point I was making. I was stressing the difference. I actually think a piano is harder to play to be honest (although that may just be my perspective - although I'd hazard for both of this is "second instrument" syndrome; rather than anything objective, unless you could get two people with the exact same genetic make-up and aptitude etc to simultaneously learn the piano and keyboard side by side; you can't really decide which is harder to play). When you're playing a piano you've got a lot of work to project the sound you're after whereas with a keyboard as long as you set up right, can actually play the tune etc you'll be ok.

Not sure what your point is? Having the same keyboard does not make them the same instrument. Yes the same playing style and interface is used for them but the capabilities are very different. and try to play it on a keyboard you're going to run into difficulties pretty quickly; which is why you use lead sheets.  Keyboards also have a massive amount of digital opportunities to exploit, again something you're not going to get on a piano. The market for digital pianos with fully weighted keys and a limited number of different sounds, should be evidenced that keyboards simply don't meet the needs of a piano player and pianos don't meet the needs of a keyboard player. That's not to say a piano player couldn't play a keyboard and vice versa. But I don't think it's that much different to how a guitar player can probably play a ukukule, it'd just be wise for them to try and do it for the first time in front of someone.

Played trombone in HS, and afterward learned bass guitar (to some extent) which remains my main instrument of choice, though I've written a number of songs while sitting at the piano/keyboard.  About 5 years ago I crushed the tippy-tip of my middle finger/left hand and kinda ended my bass playing, along with just being old and lazy.  Now I just sing karoake.

The other buttons are additional to the keys of the instrument.

Any Piano player will be able to play a keyboard ( and vice versa) because, essentially, the modern keyboard is a Piano.

Yes I think I might have Deathray. It's true that with the 'pianoforte' (direct translation soft loud) the touch-sensitive keys make or break an interpretation of a piece. But I have enormous respect for anyone who has to make an effort to learn an instrument and as you say, there are many variables with a keyboard.

 

It's my first instrument as if happens. Guitar and most wind / brass instruments followed. What's your primary one?

Trust me one instrument is enough for me  , I just meant that we might see the one we don't play normally out of keyboard and piano as the harder to play one. Unless you count playing the recorder in primary school
