Youth in Asia 1,086 Posted May 5, 2018 Avicii was not yet 30 and basically redefined the genre in the early 2010s, bringing EDM into the mainstream with his great ear for melody, and willingness to take risks (see his set at Ultra 2013). Walking around the shops today, melodic EDM seems to be in almost every song on the radio. I think Cobain was the last genre-defining musician who died so young. The heir to Avicii is currently Martin Garrix, let's hope he handles things better. As a side-note, is the ubiquity of EDM and computer-composed music in general the final victory of keyboardists over guitarists. Is guitar music now basically dead? EDIT: just glanced up the thread and had forgotten about Tupac and Biggie Smalls in around 1996.
