Sir Patrick Moore

Greatly enjoying this afternoon's BBC Radio Four play on Patrick, which is making some mileage from the touchy area of his involvement with the infamous Cedric Allingham/Flying Saucer from Mars UFO hoax.

Check out the long term work of - for example - Dr Michael Persinger wiki page. His work, controversial in part, revolves around the link between electromagnetism and human consciousness. He's touched on paranormal reports, like those of UFO abduction and out of body experiences because he believes there may be electromagnetic and environmental causes. In other words, he sees UFO hotspots as - potentially - the best sources of evidence for his ideas. A UK researcher called Albert Budden also touched on much the same areas. His little selling but worth reading book; Electric UFOs was the most substantial thing he published.

Weird thread to obit him in but it's the only place he's been mentioned on the site before: Michael Persinger now gets to give God his helmet back in person, having died aged 73.

Bring back Heather Couper

One of Handy's subs for Pointless Celebrities team. Nice to know I'm not alone in having subs die rather than the main team.

Aye, not the first time that's happened to me. She looked fucking awful on Pointless Celebrities too so I should have included her.

Aye, she did, and I completely forgot about that. Not the first time someone has shown up looking dire on Pointless shortly before dying either.

Bit of a shocker that. Next to Patrick Moore she always seemed so young and healthy !

Patrick Moore was sometimes a figure of derision in UFO circles particularly decades ago when almost all the UFO literature tended to be pro-ET and he was held up as some kind of narrow-minded reactionary. Anyway, not long back I found his book Can You Speak Venusian? in a charity shop and I've just started reading it. 1976 edition and he visits and discusses all kinds of fringe groups and opinions with the kind of lively, open-minded and highly tolerant attitude that was absent from the very UFO literature that condemned him. Mind, in the opening section he has it in big-time for religious cults and others involved in brainwashing.

Dated as hell but a lively read which I'm really enjoying.
