Summer in Transylvania 2,184 Posted September 17, 2022 Chuck Grassley is 89 today. Holocaust Survivor Arek Hersh was 94 on the 13th. Hersh is a rather interesting case, he was taken to Auschwitz in 1942, travelling two days and one night before arriving, malnourished, at the camp. By this time, he had already been residing in concentration camps and ghettos for three years. When he arrived at Auschwitz, he escaped a brush with death, at the very last moment switching queues from the one that was set to be gassed, and the one that was set to be put to work, both of these sorted by Jozef Mengele himself. The camp wasn't much better, though, he was starved, beaten, dehydrated, he accumulated lice, and he slept on a bunk with nine others every night. As was customary for camp inhabitants, he had a number, B7608, tattooed on his arm, which is still there today. He describes his experiences in Auschwitz as "The most horrific thing any human being should ever see". In total, he lost 81 family members, only reuniting with his sister after the war ended and he was brought to England as part of The Windermere Children. Only 40 residents of his home town of Sieradz, Poland survived in its entirety. He scarcely spoke of his time at Auschwitz until he released a book called A Detail of History in 1995. As of 2016, he works in the very same camp he lived the worst years of his life in, showing people around and talking about his experiences. He received an MBE for his work in 2009. He was one of the six Holocaust Survivors immortalised in portraits for this year's Holocaust Memorial Day. The artist was Massimiliano Pironti (pictured with Hersh below).

time 8,599 Posted September 19, 2022 Pete Murray may or may not be 97 today. Variously his birthdates can be found as 19 September 1925, 19 September 1928 and 25 September 1925. After a stint at Radio Luxembourg, he moved to the BBC, becoming a regular on the Light Programme; he was then one of the original DJs at the opening of Radio One. His show was cancelled by the BBC in 1983 as his style was too outdated, and nothing at all to do with his appearance on BBC Breakfast time when he told viewers that "a vote for Labour was a vote for Communism; May God have mercy on your soul if you don't vote Conservative".
