Melita Norwood

Do you all remember the granny spy who was in the news a few years back? I'm trying to find out her date of birth. Anyone know?

All I know is that she is in her late 80's...

She'll be 93 this year, I believe. Don't have a DOB yet unfortunately. Good call though, she didn't look that strong back in those crazy days of '99.

In her own words "I am not technical,' crazy lady. I'd completely forgotten her. I'm assuming from the tone of the posts so far that she is definitely still alive.

David Burke, whose biography of Mrs Norwood is due out next year, said: “As a woman she was everybody’s favourite granny. She was very kindhearted. ".

“I did not want money. It was not that side I was interested in. I wanted Russia to be on an equal footing with the West.”

“I did what I did not to make money but to help prevent the defeat of a new system which had at great cost given ordinary people food and fares which they could afford, good education and a health service.”

“In general terms, one shouldn’t betray one’s country. But if, for example, this Government decided to work against Cuba . . . I have great admiration for Cuba, I would help them. I would do it again.”

A rather random threadcromancy too, but it did introduce me to the story of a woman I had never heard of before. Suspect I was a bit too young to remember the hooha in 99.
