Liz Truss

Recommended Posts

I'm afraid I don't think Liz Truss will ever be a suitable pick on Deathlist according to the rules: someone just interviewed two individuals at the races, of which she was one, and the interviewer had no idea who she is:

(Props to the guys in the studio for also using the best pun possible at the end of the clip)

She really comes across as the kind of person who daddy would have brought every pony in the catalogue for as a child, doesn't she?

As a child she got her daddy to buy thousands of Wonka bars in pursuit of a golden ticket and later fell down a garbage chute.

The opposite, she's the daughter of a couple of intellectuals and her folks weren't Tories. Her mum did a few jobs but served for years as a teacher, her dad was a professor of pure mathematics, and I'm fairly sure at some point Liz described the pair of them as having politics "to the left of Labour" which is saying summat because in her lifetime that included Labour as led by Michael Foot.

Bizarre how someone with that background can turn out like her. She really does have 'grown-up Veruca Salt' written all over her.

Let's keep in mind that left-wing to Liz is probably considered centre-right by most people!

Yes, the current Liz probably considers Theresa May, David Cameron and John Major to be socialists and the entire City of London to be "woke Marxists".

A good op-ed piece in today's i from the former assistant editor of The New Statesman saying about how Truss would be far better off being self deprecating about her time in office rather than taking offence all the time, but noting that her lack of embarrassment and self awareness means that won't happen and she'll continue to become more and more irrelevant.

One delicious nugget in it that has passed me by is that Anthony Selsdon is not writing a biography of her. For context, he has written post-office books about the premierships of Blair, Brown, Cameron, May and Johnson but doesn't see Truss as worthy of a book. Instead - the pièce de resistance - he's going to give her a single chapter in his book on Rishi Sunak. :D

I know a number of people close to her and I have no doubt that she genuinely considers that she did an excellent job as PM and if only she'd had an opportunity to continue she'd have been more popular than Churchill. The delusion is very strong here.

In many ways the case of Truss is more fascinating than any of them. How did someone so obviously deficient and ill-equipped to be Prime Minister come to hold the highest office in the land? It's a question that deserves serious analysis to prevent future Liz Trusses becoming Prime Minister in the future.

Just to say, the facepalm is for the delusion not your post. :D

Do you mean her carers? No chance someone of that level of ineptitude functions independently.

New book puts the boot into her tenure as PM and suggests she considered making savings in cancer care to underwrite the disastrous mini-budget, perhaps more accurately this was used by treasury officials as an example of what she'd have to do to finance that budget and Truss's reaction involved shouting at everyone because she thought the money could be found. 330 pages from a month and a half as Prime Minister, so it was eventful and people are obviously already willing to dob her in it and talk to a biographer.

With an astonishing lack of self-awareness that is surprising to literally nobody at this stage, Liz Truss has claimed at the Conservative party conference that the party would have done better in the General Election if she had remained in charge rather than Rishi Sunak. This despite not even being able to hold on to her own seat. The fact they've let her in the building, let alone given her a platform, is ridiculous. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c7481gy3kg9o

Well, "ridiculous" here depends on your politics, there are a hard core of Tories who think her "fiscal event" would have righted itself and changed our economy for the better. There are financial people influencing politics, especially in the US who love this argument.

Then there's everyone who hates the Tories and loves Liz's interruptions to their electoral recovery.

She's also charmless to the point she's probably beyond reinvention in a Portillo style and she's way lower budget than Bojo and other recently deposed Tory leaders.

So, this is what she does because the other options aren't offering themselves

We should send Truss round to pensioners' homes this winter to waffle on about her economic fantasies. Forget heating, they might need air conditioning!
