It was, but it was released in the 60s, and there was a debate in that Kill or Save thread whether the songs should be separated out, and a lot of people expressed that it should but we couldn't do it as the round had already started.

No no, it wasn’t a UK No.1 single; Can’t Help Falling In Love / Rock-A-Hula Baby was. Whether one or the other would’ve charted that well on its own or not is purely hypothetical, so they can’t be accepted as separate entities.

 

It might be the case that one side is shit, one side is great. That’s bad luck, I’m afraid. It’s down to the individual whether they give points for their favourite side, take points for the rubbish side, take an average of the two and score accordingly, or flat out ignore them. Personally, I’d take an average. But to split them is to allow two songs that don’t meet the game criteria.

My suggestion is take a vote whether people want them separated or not.

I used that example as one song regularly appears on "greatest songs of all time" list and the other is never mentioned, so clearly the two tracks are regularly evaluated separately.

One such case we'll see in the 50s No.1s is The Everly Brothers - All I Have To Do Is Dream / Claudette. The world and their dogs know the A-side. I love the song. Claudette? Never heard of it. Doesn't matter. People bought the A/B and got them to No.1. It might be that you think Dream did all the heavy lifting of the two, and I'm not about to argue the toss on that, but if that's what you think, by all means vote accordingly, give it the points because of how legendary Dream is!

 

I'm not budging because it would be wrong, after ten of these games, to suddenly change the qualifying criteria. Sorry.

I think it helps a lot that the double sides are so long ago, that it kind of sorts itself out. Can’t Help Falling In Love justly endures and Rock-A-Hula Baby is justly forgotten, so we all just agreed to vote based off the former. If Rock-A-Hula Baby was equally culturally enduring while not being very good then it might've been more of a dilemma.

This is just what I've always done. I looked at the doubles and pick the one I like best. There's one in the 08-09 round for Leona Lewis.

Hello All,

 

Following the conclusion of the No 2s of the '10s game we have a vacancy for another game to run alongside the No 3s games. A discussion was had and we concluded that we are going to go with a theme idea submitted by @Bibliogryphon. We are going to have a player nominted game, where we go through every song that peaked between 6 and 40 from 1952 to 2019. Using player nominations we all get to choose our favourites for each category, so we avoid all the rubbish. Over the course of all the games all the players who submit entries will eventully complete a series of tables like this:

Each player gets to nominate one track in each box but the same artist cannot be represented in the same row or column. It doesn't matter if the same track gets nominated by more than one player it just reduces the numbers in the round.

 

For our first game I am asking for submissions for Top 10s (ex 1-5) of the 1970s. Rules as follows:

 

1. We are looking for a songs peak position in the charts for their first chart run, re-releases and re-entries will be allowed if it didn't enter the top 40 the first time around. 

2. The date of the peak position, rather than the release date will be used to determine the year.

3. You don't have to submit an entry to play, but it is strongly encouraged as it will give more variety.

4. Entries are to be submitted by DM to myself, entries close at 23:59 GMT 29th December 2024. This will give me a couple of days to go through all the entries and put together my own.

5. Going forward all entries will need to be submitted before the end of the previous round/game.

 

The format of the game will be determined on how many entries are recieved. I see 3 possible options.

Option A: Top 10s of the '70s, to consist of 5 rounds covering 2 years each. Alternatively this could be 2 rounds covering 5 years each in the same way as the No 2s of the '50s. The number of finalists will depend on the number of entries.

Option B: Top 10s of all time. This will be 7 rounds, 1 for each decade, again the number of finalists will depend on the number of entries.

Option C: Top 40 of the 70s. This would be 4 rounds, 6-10, 11-20, 21-30 & 31-40, with the number of finalists determined by the number of entries.

 

Which ever form we settle on for this game, we will use the same format for future games. If you have a preference please let me know below, or in your entry.

 

The aim is to start this game on the 1st January 2025. The usual rules will apply with one addition - Until the first song is eliminated in each round you cannot give more than 50% of you score (+2/-3) to a single song.

 

@diego as the Chistmas special has gone well I would like to invite you to join these games if you wish. Please do not make me regret this decision.

Thank you @AstroKat I get all the fun of being able to play this game but not have to do the fiddly list building. However I have compiled my 6-10 already and messed it up. For the First half of the decade it is a bit barren pickings but I could have filled the last three years four times over in each of the four columns. So I hope you pick the ones I haven't.

I'm going through a crisis just for 6-10 artists. As soon as I find one artist I then find another with a better song in that same year, lol. I like this way of submission though. Makes me appreciate music.

The next round/game depends on which game format we settle on, which is determined by the number of entries.

For option A - the next game will be 80s 6-10s

For option B - the next round will be 80s 6-10s

For option C - the next round will be 70s 11-20s
