Football Manager Sacking Bingo 3

Hmmm, been saying the new owners at Carlisle are talking a long-game and have put in the kind of money that buys a revival in a relegation zone team. Up until this afternoon it looked like Paul Simpson was safe but a 0-4 home spanking in a relegation six-pointer has forced him on the defensive. Performances, especially surrendering midfield possession and then chaotic defending have done for us, though it likely can't help that we brought in enough new talent to make those already in place restless and we've struggled in the transfer window to offload the displaced players. The atmosphere on the training ground with the newbies being spanked and others unable to get on the bench still training with them is likely a challenge to any manager. Simmo saved us two years ago when the National League was beckoning and - last season - got a team with a bottom half budget promoted via the play-offs. He also went down (to the Conference) with us in 2004 and managed two promotions in a row from that point. So, who knows: https://www.newsandstar.co.uk/sport/24126673.carlisle-uniteds-paul-simpson-pledges-keep-fighting/

If he got you promoted last season against the odds, and is a Carlisle legend, surely he deserves the opportunity to keep you up and, if necessary get you back up?

Yeah, well, I think so - but that's seven defeats on the bounce and a club record string of games without a clean sheet - some of the fans are getting restless. I'm struggling to see how we'd help the meagre survival chances by changing things now and if we do go down I'm thinking Simmo has form getting a relegated Carlisle promoted the next season. And, he's local, and a local legend.

Fans have very short memories unfortunately.

It is often a fact for yo-yo clubs that managers sacked for failing to keep them in the higher league would be a very good match for escaping the lower league the following season

Not a sacking but recently appointed Birmingham manager Tony Mowbray standing down temporarily due to a health concern

Rumoured for the last few days and according to various football sites and forums Millwall about to part company with head coach Joe Edwards after only 19 games in charge and replace him with former manager Neil Harris who they sacked over 4 years ago. This modern day football is a strange business

Been a bit slow getting this entry together, but while there's been 5 managerial changes in the past 2 weeks, there's only been 1 hit and 1 miss as the other 3 were ineligible! Michael Beale was sacked by Sunderland after another stupid managerial change backfired, having replaced Tony Mowbray (just outside the playoffs) in December. 6 losses in 12 matches since and off he pops. Likewise, Joe Edwards replaced Gary Rowett at Millwall in November but has now been relieved of his duties after 7 defeats in 8 left them 1 point clear of the Championship relegation zone. He has been replaced by former Millwall boss Neil Harris, who leaves League One Cambridge having only joined them in December - our third ineligible change in a fortnight!

Our miss came on February 17th, when Richard Hill left National League Eastleigh by mutual consent after no wins in 11 matches. It is the second time Hill has left Eastleigh as manager. https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/24126633.richard-hill-departs-eastleigh-club-15th-national-league/

The hit is a big one, though, as Roy Hodgson stepped down as Crystal Palace manager after 4 years in charge - this was having been hospitalised after being taken ill amidst news he was about to be sacked and replaced by former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glassner. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/68341602 This was a hit for no less than 6 players! @Commtech Sio Bibble and @BuffaloPhil both get a 6th hit to move off the bottom of the table, but unfortunately for them @maryportfuncity gets a 7th hit to move clear and leave Bibble and Phil, along with MariNisia...at the bottom! @Bibliogryphon, meanwhile, moves onto 8 hits. @Sly Ronnie gets his 10th hit to become the second person to reach the halfway mark, but is still one behind @Great Uncle Bulgaria who moves onto 11!

We've now had 40 hits, enough to win the game twice! But only two players are halfway there. Probably part of the problem is only 3 Premier League clubs have parted ways with their manager so far, with Klopp to follow at the end of the season. Last season's turmoil probably making this season quieter but there's time for that to change!

Updated Scoreboard

Great Uncle Bulgaria - 11

Sly Ronnie - 10

Wannamaker, Lady Fiona, Rover and Out - 9

Bibliogryphon - 8

Diego, Maryportfuncity - 7

MariNisia, Commtech Sio Bibble, Buffalo Phil - 6

Amazingly Watford who usually get through a few managers per season are still employing Valerien Ismael despite only being 11th in the Championship and not in contention for the play offs

Didn't they do something ridiculous like give him a new contract rather than sack him?

On the Verge of being sacked now.

Does anything sum up the ludicrousness of the managerial merry-go-round better than this?

If you're interested, in the comparison, his predecessor at Cambridge Mark Bonner had a league record this season of P19 W5 D5 L9 20pts, 18th in table. He got sacked.

Harris had a record of P14 W5 D3 L6 18pts, 17th in table. He got a promotion.

What a transformation.

John Coleman sacked by Accrington Stanley. A hit here I believe.

Indeed it is. This one has caught me by surprise, John Coleman is a local legend in these parts. I know it's been rumoured for a little while, he's not been offered a new contract despite wanting one and there's been some disciplinary issues between him and his assistant Jimmy Bell and some of the referees. Nevertheless, what he's done for Accrington Stanley ("Who are they?!") can never be understated. When he first took over at the Crown Ground, Accrington Stanley were in the Unibond (Northern) Premier League Division One - Tier 7 of the pyramid at the time. By 2003, they had won promotion both from Divison One and then the Northern Premier League to compete in the Conference, Tier 5 of the pyramid and the highest rank of non-league. 3 years later, they won the Conference and re-entered the Football League for the first time in 44 years. Despite one of the smallest budgets in the league, Accrington survived their first season back and established themselves in the 4th tier and in 2010-11, they reached the play-offs. The following season saw Coleman leave for a new opportunity at Rochdale in League One (how that situation has changed!) but he was sacked a year later and 18 months after that returned to Accrington in September 2014. After missing out on promotion on the final day in 2015-16 (and then losing in the play-offs) in 2018, they won League Two to move into the 3rd tier for the first time since the early 1960s. They spent 5 years in League One before being relegated last summer. They are 16th in a very tight play-off race in League Two this season, but got hammered 4-0 by Wrexham yesterday, which seems to have been the final straw. A rather brief 43-word statement ended more than 20 years of association between Coleman and Bell at Accrington, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him back for a third spell at some point. Time will tell. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/68460389

A unique hit in this game for Wannamaker, which puts him at the 50% completion stage and joint-2nd with Sly Ronnie, one behind leader GUB.

Two recent changes in National League South - Gary Johnson out at Torquay amidst financial problems there (hit for MPFC).

Alan Dowson out at Dartford, with last year's playoff final losers currently sitting in the bottom half of the table.

Bradley Quinton, who scored for me in the last round by being sacked by Welling, has scored for no one in being sacked by Hemel Hempstead (National League South), who have drifted from top half to 16th in recent weeks.

Just an idea - if we do this again we should have a kind of side-bet competition of picking the manager who'll have the most jobs whilst the competition is still live. I.e., managerial jobs, reserve team coach, chief scout, football agent etc. don't count. Main managerial jobs or nowt. I'm thinking there are a few - particularly non-league types - who can clock up three home dugouts in a season, but calling them would be hard.

Neil Warnock chucks it after 5 games.  Unlikely anyone will have picked him though.

He's already scored in this round by leaving Huddersfield earlier in the season.

Does that mean whoever picked him gets the points again?
