Mad World was fourth on my list of the Finalists so I think this is a fair result. However the pattern of voting makes me think this is the compromise candidate.

This has been an absolutely fantastic round with a lot of strong songs.

Thanks @wannamaker for the admin duties.

The last time we saw Tears for Fears in a KoS game, they placed second in the 80's Number 2s. This time Curt & Roland managed to win the whole thing by being the ultimate compromise candidate. "Mad World" rarely moved throughout the final until the last few days of voting, where it received a huge amount of support since some voters had lost their favourite songs. Who would've guessed that a song with the lyrics "The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had" would be generally popular with deadpoolers?

The Gary Jules version of this song might have had a higher peak in the charts, but the original now has the highly prestigious "Won the best UK number 3 of the 80s according to the deathlist forums"™ award, whilst the cover version was going nowhere, going nowhere in the 2000s No.1's game.

The other artists in the top 3 were familiar faces in these games, since they already had some decent placements in previous KoS installments, so we can tell who are the forum favourites purely based on the final results of these games.

Mad World peaked at number 3 for 3 weeks in November 1982, with only Culture Club's "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me", Eddy Grant's "I Don't Wanna Dance" & Dionne Warwick's "Heartbreaker" reaching a higher position.

This is how the final round played out:

01 Tears for Fears- Mad World

02 Kate Bush- Running Up That Hill

03 The Bangles- Walk Like an Egyptian

04 The Vapors- Turning Japanese

05 The Damned- Eloise

06 Cyndi Lauper- Time After Time

07 Madness- Baggy Trousers (winner in my heart :D)

08 Ultravox- Dancing with Tears in My Eyes

09 Tina Turner- We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)

10 Queen- A Kind of Magic

11 Queen- I Want It All

12 Aztec Camera- Somewhere in My Heart

13 Roy Orbison- You Got It

14 Soft Cell- Say Hello, Wave Goodbye

15 Eurythmics- Who’s That Girl?

16 Bronski Beat- Smalltown Boy

17 Heart- Alone

18 New Order- Blue Monday 88

19 Yazoo- Don’t Go

20 Michael Jackson- Bad

21 Earth, Wind & Fire- Let’s Groove

22 Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark- Souvenir

23 Jona Lewie- Stop the Cavalry

24 Womack & Womack- Teardrops

25 The J. Geils Band- Centerfold

(spotify playlist for this game)

We found these 25 singles kinda funny and kinda sad, these were the worst No.3's of the 80s according to us:

Dennis Waterman with the Dennis Waterman Band- I Could Be So Good For You
Fiddler’s Dram- Day Trip to Bangor
Tony Capstick and the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band- Capstick Comes Home/The Sheffield Grinder
The Nolans- I’m in the Mood for Dancing
Sheena Easton- 9 to 5
The Kids from “Fame”- Starmaker
Julio Iglesias- Quiéreme Mucho (Yours)
David Bowie & Bing Crosby- Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy
Wham!- Young Guns (Go For It!)
Adam & The Ants- Ant Rap
Paul McCartney & The Frog Chorus- We All Stand Together
Sarah Brightman & Paul Miles-Kingston- Pie Jesu
Break Machine- Street Dance
Joe Fagin- That’s Livin’ Alright
Red Box- Lean On Me (Ah-Li-Ayo)
Cliff Richard & Sarah Brightman- All I Ask of You
Comic Relief Presents Mel And Kim- Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree
George Michael- I Want Your Sex
Cliff Richard- Some People
Samantha Fox- Touch Me (I Want Your Body)
Cliff Richard- I Just Don’t Have the Heart
Liverpool FC- Anfield Rap (Red Machine in Full Effect)
Milli Vanilli- Girl You Know It’s True
D Mob ft. Gary Haisman- We Call It Acieed
Angry Anderson- Suddenly

Thanks to everyone for voting, 90's game will be up soon.

Never liked the Gary Jules version, but always liked Tears For Fears. Still a bit sore that Everybody Wants To Rule The World didn’t win the No.2s as that’s one of my favourites of all time.

Great job as always @wannamaker, looking forward to the 90s!

I first learned of Mad World (the Gary Jules one) via a SpongeBob meme

At any rate, Tears For Fears definitely a group who deserve to have KoS gold.

Mad World came up 4th on my list of finalists too. As you say a compromise candidate but a worthy winner. A little miffed that Eloise didn't place higher because imo it's better than the original and also one of my all time favourites.

Of all the games of KoS I've played this has been the most enjoyable, so many strong songs throughout, so many there's a few that didn't make it to the final. The first final where I liked every song. It also makes me a little sad that I missed all of the earlier games.

Thanks to @wannamaker for hosting. See you in the 90s.

Obviously disappointed that Walk Like an Egyptian didn't win but that was a cracking Top 3 and overall a great game of KoS

Many thanks to @wannamaker

Yep the first final where I haven't disliked any of the songs which is great. A few that I'd have liked to finish a bit higher but overall happy with that one. Thanks @wannamaker.

This would've been my order:

  1. Madness — Baggy Trousers (+6)
  2. Roy Orbison — You Got It (+11)
  3. Bronski Beat — Smalltown Boy (+13)
  4. Yazoo — Don’t Go (+15)
  5. New Order — Blue Monday 88 (+13)
  6. Queen — I Want It All (+5)
  7. Tears For Fears — Mad World (-6)
  8. Tina Turner — We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome) (+1)
  9. Cyndi Lauper — Time After Time (-3)
  10. Queen — A Kind Of Magic (=)
  11. The Bangles — Walk Like An Egyptian (-8)
  12. Kate Bush — Running Up That Hill (-10)
  13. Womack & Womack — Teardrops (+11)
  14. Earth, Wind & Fire — Let’s Groove (+7)
  15. Eurythmics — Who’s That Girl? (=)
  16. Jona Lewie — Stop The Cavalry (+7)
  17. Aztec Camera — Somewhere In My Heart (-5)
  18. The Damned — Eloise (-13)
  19. Ultravox — Dancing With Tears In My Eyes (-11)
  20. The J. Geils Band — Centerfold (+5)
  21. Soft Cell — Say Hello, Wave Goodbye (-7)
  22. Michael Jackson — Bad (-2)
  23. The Vapors — Turning Japanese (-19)
  24. Heart — Alone (-7)
  25. Orchestral Maneouvres In The Dark — Souvenir (-3)

Fair to say, though, that the only one I hate is the OMD track, and that The Damned upwards are all excellent. Very good final, even if my order would've been (as ever) completely different.

I bowed out of this as there was so little to choose between so many of the finalists I didn't feel in a position to decide. Of the final 3, if have thrown my weight behind the lovely Susanna Hoffs I think, so apologies for not helping those in The Bangles' corner, but Mad World is a very worthy winner. What a decade!
