Kill or Save: UK No.3 Hits of the 90s

Thank god for that. For a minute, I was worried the chicken korma brigade had put some EMF white noise in the lead.

Corrected scoreboard:

19 Faithless - Insomnia

18 EMF - Unbelievable

11 No Doubt - Just a Girl

I'm coming to say that I got a little problem irl and I'm probably not going to be able to finish this game and start the 60's one until late tomorrow. Sorry in advance.

No worries at all. Life has to come first. Take it easy.

Bit of a marmite winner there eh? One of those where maybe the exact timing of the votes had an influence.

Still, a worthy winner for me, I don't generally like rap and moan about it constantly, then somebody reminds me that done well and fitted with a tune somewhere it can be blinding.

Track is absolutely nothing like In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins - except in one way - I'll let you guess why I think that (rightly or wrongly).

Damn good job. Damn good bloody good damn good job. Dark, pulsating classic with that unmistakeable 90s vibe makes this a very satisfying winner, even if I'd personally have preferred that epic Sisters Of Mercy track.

The other songs are good, but... Insomnia was my favourite song aged 6. The Monster Mix, the big lad, not the radio edit. I memorised all 8⅔ minutes and honestly I responded to it quite similarly to In the Air Tonight, one of my other favourites when I was 6 (thanks, Cadbury). Loves a beat drop. They both build up for what seems like forever but justify it every time. I find the rap entering more than 5 minutes into the track to be quite subversive.

It's on my Mount Rushmore of 90s dance along with, I want to say, Chicane – Saltwater and Orbital – Halcyon and On and On. The 4th slot's up for debate.

I prefer it too, though I do like both.

My sister was never that much of a music fan historically or at least not as driven by hi-fi mania as I was. She finally suggested for a christmas present an update to her 10 year old 10 quid computer speakers that she had used for everything - watching tv on the same device.  So whilst not particulary a fan of soundbars (I really am a sad hi-fi nerd) I thought it appropriate in this case and bought her one of those bar/sub combo's. (we struggle yearly at our age, most things in the xmas present price range that you want you already bought, why wouldn't you have?).

The point of this long and rambling anecdote that means nothing to anyone? We were testing it out, and she loved 'Temple of Love' much against my expectations (I imagined her a  'chicken korma' afficionado - perhaps unjustly, appropriate apologies to LadyFiona). Even agreed that a good track was raised to the level of truly great by the addition of Ofra Haza.

Moral? I'm a berk who doesn't even really know my sister after all this time.

Lifelong Insomnia fan, these days I really like the live versions. Was really torn up when Maxi Jazz died a couple years ago,

Perhaps I made a mistake. As I was unfamiliar with it, I listened to the first couple of minutes, and thought it's ok but not great, and voted accordingly. I'm going to have to have another listen to it, this time all the way through. In The Air Tonight I know from the first time around and the beat drop makes it worthwhile.

Edited to add - So I took a listen and once the beat dropped I realised I actually already knew this one. I probably would have placed it a little higher in my rankings.

Sorry for the delay, I got busy and I couldn’t get no sleep until it was very late.

Well, there you have it! After 3 months of killing and saving songs we decided that Insomnia by Faithless was the best UK No.3 hit of the 90s.  A very appropriate win for a very 90s song with one of the most iconic drops in music history.

In the qualifying round, Insomnia got little support at the beginning, but as the round went on the song rose like yeast and remained comfortably in that round's top 6. And in the final it was a similar story, a few points at the start and then it was a permanent fixture at the top of the table. So even if the group was Faithless, the KoS voters were faithful to them.

Going through the list, No Doubt and Fatboy Slim yet again reach the Top 5 after doing it in the 90s No's 1s game, so I'd say those 2 are the forum's favourite 90s artists that haven't won a game yet.

Insomnia originally peaked at Number 27 in 1995, but a re-release a year later got the song to number 3 for 1 week in October 1996, with the Spice Girls “Say You’ll be There” and Boyzone’s “Words” reaching a higher position.

This is how the final round played out:

01 Faithless - Insomnia

02 No Doubt - Just a Girl

03 EMF - Unbelievable

04 Annie Lennox - Little Bird/Love Song for a Vampire

05 Fatboy Slim - Gangster Trippin

06 Suede - Stay Together

07 The Waterboys - The Whole of the Moon

08 Youssou N’Dour ft. Neneh Cherry - 7 Seconds

09 Everything But The Girl - Missing (Todd Terry Remix)

10 Erasure -  Blue Savannah

11 Roxette - It Must Have Been Love

12 Savage Garden - To the Moon and Back

13 Shania Twain - That Don’t Impress Me Much

14 Spin Doctors - Two Princes

15 Stereophonics - The Bartender and the Thief

16 The Sisters of Mercy ft. Ofra Haza - Temple of Love (1992)

17 Suede - Trash

18 The Seahorses - Love Is The Law

19 Radiohead - Paranoid Android

20 Enigma - Return to Innocence

21 Shania Twain - Man! I Feel Like a Woman

22 The Source ft. Candi Staton - You Got The Love (Now Voyager Mix)

23 Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop (That Thing)

24 Luther Vandross & Mariah Carey - Endless Love

25 Billy Joel - The River of Dreams

(spotify playlist)

Even if my top 3 favourite songs didn't make the final, I still think we did a decent job with this song selection (still angry about Scatman though).

And these were the dark forces we fought in the clear moon light, the worst No.3's of the 90s.

John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John - The Grease Megamix
Michael Bolton - How Am I Supposed to Live Without You
2 In A Room - Wiggle It
49ers - Touch Me
Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart
Right Said Fred - Don’t Talk Just Kiss
Shabba Ranks - Mr. Loverman
Inner Circle - Sweat (A La La La La Long)
Boyzone - So Good
Mighty Morph’n Power Rangers - Power Rangers
The Rembrandts - I’ll Be There for You
Oasis - Whatever
R. Kelly - She’s Got That Vibe
East 17 - Hey Child
Goldbug - Whole Lotta Love
Steven Houghton - Wind Beneath My Wings
Peter Andre - All About Us
Mariah Carey - Always Be My Baby
Babybird - You’re Gorgeous
Vengaboys - We Like to Party! (The Vengabus)
Celine Dion & R. Kelly - I’m Your Angel
Cleopatra - Cleopatra’s Theme
Boyzone - Every Day I Love You
Will Smith - Miami
Five - Got The Feelin’

Thank you all for voting and making this game work, 60's game will be up soon. (No Beatles songs btw, so no heated Fab Four discussions this time)

Which says all you need to know about the musical quality of the charts in general .

This would've been my order. None of my personal top 3 made the top half, even. That being said, I really like everything above EMF and Faithless still strikes me as a great winner so I'm not angry.
