Sir Creep 7,013 Posted September 21, 2018 For the first time ever police in India invited the media to attend one of its ‘encounters,’ news of the invitation soon spread and regional and national reporters lined up at the location in the Machua village within 15 minutes. The moment police shot dead two alleged murderers has been caught on camera as officers invited journalists to attend what was branded a “cold-blooded” killing, local media reports. Clorox Bleachman 2,021 Posted September 25, 2018 Another unsurprising statistic which shows life expectancy in Scotland is getting worse than it already is. The plus side is that the oldest people are living longer. On the TV they were saying that the news is pretty grim for those in Glasgow and doubly so for those in poorer areas, so that makes me middle-aged. Not great news for the rest of the UK, either. Only the US has seen life expectancy slow more quickly.

Only the US has seen life expectancy slow more quickly. The historical picture is that life expectancy in the UK was trending upwards nicely until about 2010, but has slowed down a lot since. The total growth in life expectancy in the UK between 2010 and 2016 was just 0.6 years, compared to an EU average rise of 1.1 years, with no rise at all between 2014 and 2016 in the UK; and between 2010 and 2016 the UK slipped from having the 11th highest life expectancy in the EU to the 15th highest, with Greece, Portugal, Belgium and Finland overtaking us on this metric. (Stats from Table 1 in this article). One thing that's worth noting about life expectancy is that it correlates quite well with quality of life; healthier, happier people tend to live longer, and few would argue that the UK has grown healthier or happier in recent years. On the contrary, we've seen rises in the prevalence of a range of issues, from obesity and type 2 diabetes to destitution and rough sleeping; and it doesn't look like things are going to get better soon. Sir Creep 7,013 Posted November 29, 2018 Suicides and drug overdoses pushed up U.S. deaths last year, and drove a continuing decline in how long Americans are expected to live. Overall, there were more than 2.8 million U.S. deaths in 2017, or nearly 70,000 more than the previous year. It was the most deaths in a single year since the government began counting more than a century ago. The increase partly reflects the nation’s growing and aging population. The suicide death rate last year was the highest it’s been in at least 50 years, according to U.S. government records. There were more than 47,000 suicides, up from a little under 45,000 the year before. "West Virginia was once again the state with the highest rate of drug overdose deaths." Boy I can understand that one. SC

SC I was reading this article on the same topic https://www.bmj.com/content/363/bmj.k5118, and it did add one optimistic note - overdose deaths in the USA do seem to at last have started tracking down again, based on the latest data to May 2018 http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/drug-overdose-data.htm Of course, that's just a slow climb down so far from 2017's impressively high 72000 US overdose deaths, or 22 out of every 100,000 people. Twice as many Americans as die on the roads each year, and four times as many as die by intentional homicude.

Sir Creep 7,013 Posted December 31, 2018 In 1995, U.K.-based American artist William Utermohlen was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. This is a difficult diagnosis and illness for anyone, but before his death in 2007, Utermohlen created a heart-wrenching final series of self-portraits over the stages of Alzheimer’s, which lasted roughly five years. Documenting the gradual decay of his mind, created incredibly stark drawings, which were even displayed to medical students as learning material.
