Violet Brown, the second-oldest person in the world, is celebrating her 117th birthday.

This makes it the first time there are two people aged 117+ alive at the same time in two decades.

A few years ago another Violet celebrated her 100th birthday and the local paper - The Kent Messenger - mis-printed her name to read "Violent"

Classic!

I'm with Shaun on this one.

The media always reports on unverified super-centenarians as if they were really the age they claim to be. Every once in a while, whether it's a tabloid, or a respected institution like the BBC, there is a story out about an 145-year-old from the jungles of Zimbabwe or Indonesia or wherever the fuck, and they never bother to mention that the age is unverified and the person is a big, fat liar.

Until someone we never knew existed is verified to have been born before 1900 any day now. That's the way it usually goes !

Violet Brown has just 100 days to overtake her as the oldest p;erson this century and 5th oldest person ever ! Mind you when you're 117 hanging on for 100 days is a big ask ...

I totally agree with the sentiment, RadGuy.  However case in point was the last surviving Civil War widow back about 2003 died, and suddenly there was another one who basically kept to herself and liked it that way, but her son or summat outed her.  And so it was, in fact she did exist and was verifiable.  So I do believe Emma was the last, and would never believe anything coming out of Zimbabwe, but I suppose it's remotely possible someone could exist yet.

(Edit: OH, and RIP to the 1800's). :*-(

Appropriate that someone who ate eggs every day died at Easter!

RIP 19th century.

Still Violet Brown and Nabi Tajima left from the 19th century.

Fact. I hope they would be dead before Morano so I wouldn't have to explain this 100 times a day.

Well, technically the centuries go from e.g. 1801-1900, 1901-2000.

But it's more exciting when the date changes from starting at 18 to 19, or 19 to 20.

I mean, it's the same with decades. Technically the '70s were from 1971-1980, and the '80s were 1981-1990. But obviously people don't go by that.

But I guess I see your point and people should start being more specific and saying she was the last survivor of the 1800s, not the 19th century.

Also, I wonder who was the oldest person alive to never be the oldest person alive....if you know what I mean, or well, let's say, the oldest ever person to be the second-oldest person alive without eventually becoming the oldest person alive.

Maybe it's going to be Nabi Tajima.

As far as I can tell, the current record-holder is Tane Ikai, at 116 years and 175 days, who died while Jeanne Clament was still alive and 4 years older than her.
