Eric Idle replaces Cleese with Steve Martin for revival of Spamalot, claiming "he’s getting on a bit, he’s getting up there, and John’s gone a bit strange."

John Cleese has a show on GBNEWS every Sunday. He seems absolutely fine.

As for him being "replaced" on a Spamalot revival. 1) Cleese probably wouldn't want to do it anyway. 2) I'm not surprised Idle sees him as "a bit strange". Cleese probably thinks the same of him. They've become completely different people as they've aged, not to mention their completely opposing political views.

IMO Idle will die first of the two.

Well, not completely opposing. Though Cleese has ended up doing a series on GBeebies railing against 'cancel culture' or something, he still despises the Tories like Idle does. He is a bit strange. They all are, and always were.

Have you watched it? You’d probably like it. First episode was about distrust in the media and featured an incredibly powerful interview with salon owner Danielle Hindley whose life was ruined by the Daily Mail. She’s one of the very few ppl who has successfully sued them. Second episode was an interview with Stephen Fry. Discussed AI and emerging technologies, cricket, gen Z, addiction etc. Very interesting watch.

Here’s the Hindley interview. Hard not to feel emotional listening to her story:

Must be a bit odd fit for a channel whose target audience like the Daily Mail to air such a programme.

These two statements conflict.

Just seen a recent video of John Cleese and he's not looking or sounding very well at all!

I'll be seeing John Cleese on tour in a few weeks. I'll let you all know how he's doing.

I saw John Cleese on tour last night. He spent the evening showing film clips, telling Monty Python stories, and discussing his old age. He says that he had a pacemaker implanted six weeks ago.

During the Q&A, an audience member asked him how long he had left to live. Cleese responded "I've probably got another seven or eight years. I'm not terribly scared to die, I just don't want to die yet."

New video on Instagram shows him in a wheelchair

In what looks to be an airport. He's old, it's likely the airport put him in one because he had a ways to walk. Pretty standard at most US airports at least (not sure about the UK/elsewhere).

Here's an interview of Cleese from a few months ago. The key takeaways are:

Quote

"That’s the only way you can play Basil [Fawlty], to use every muscle in your body so you can’t play him relaxed, it would never work — especially now I’ve had two hip replacements, a new knee, a bone spur and now I suffer from vertigo."

Quote

This month, Cleese revealed he is spending up to £17,000 a year to pay for stem cell therapy to combat the side effects of ageing. He has been having the treatment for more than 20 years and said he was ensuring he doesn’t “look bad” for his age by getting the “highest quality” cells from Switzerland. He admitted the fee was hefty but claimed it was “worth it if you’re buying yourself a few extra years”.
