(I hope you won't regret it that you overlooked him for 2006)

I think they're regretting a few things already... one more or less won't make much of a difference.

The former Prime Minister of Australia turns 90 this year, and reported to be in declining health. Good pick for '07?

His name is Edward Gough Whitlam, b. July 11th, 1916.

He has been in poor health for the last couple of years, so I definitely think he should be considered for next year's list.

A very strong possibility for next year (I hope you won't regret it that you overlooked him for 2006) is HRH Jean Benoit Guillaume Robert Antoine Louis Marie Adolphe Marc d'Aviano, the former archduke of Luxembourg, born january 5, 1921. His wife died last year, and he's looking extremely frail.

Does he have a nick name?

So many possibles for  2007.... How about Boris Yeltsin has he been tossed in here yet?  Suree hse is only 74 heading to 75 but take a look at him and you know he bleongs here....

Sticking with the letter Y lets take a look at Astronaut Chuck Yeager who was blasted into life in 1923, if he can Mach it to next year he will be 84

Yeltsin should always be hoverring about there BB. But Yeager seems to be doing OK, still flying last I read.

I'm glad you ask, he does indeed! According to wiki, his full title is:

by the Grace of God, Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Duke of Nassau, Prince of Bourbon of Parma, Count Palatine of the Rhine, Count of Sayn, Königstein, Katzenellenbogen and Diez, Burgrave of Hammerstein, Lord of Mahlberg, Wiesbaden, Idstein, Merenberg, Limburg and Eppstein.

I happen to know that the Dutch queen, also a Nassau, and a distant relative to Grand Duke Jean, has even more names. Would anyone like to compare them with Elizabeth? The British monarch used to be king of almost everything, but you're empire is not what it used to be, is it?

Mehmet Ali Agca, 48 the man who shot the pope in 1981 is due to be released from prison tomorrow:

" The Italian judge who investigated the 1981 murder attempt on John Paul II has warned the Turkish would-be assassin that his life will be "in grave danger" when he is released from jail because he "knows too much". "

Or he's in grave danger, because he's a loony.

Far-right Turkish nationalists, KGB and Bulgarian intelligence paying him to off the Pope. It's got all the makings of a piss-poor Tom Clancy book...

Ah.

I really must go and do some work. But if anyone has the time or the inclination to sift through this lot there must be some possibilities that have so far been overlooked. Quite a few are dead and a lot of the others are already covered. But I'm sure there are one or two good bets here. It ought to be possible to get an insider in the Water Rats. Maybe we should send them a flyer. See list at foot of page.

if she survives another year, how about Maria Esther de Capovilla? she's currently 116.

Btw what's everyone else's opinion on choosing the world's oldest man / woman

I had this debate with my father-in-law the other day as I personally feel that they don't exactly qualify as they're barely classed as a celebrity

These 'world's oldest' people are generally barred from the DL on the grounds that they're only famous because they're old. Ditto old soldiers etc

Bald Rick,

My argument exactly, although I don't entirely agree about the old soldier bit. I mean someone like Douglas Bader if they were still alive would qualify I guess as he was a Spitfire pilot and Ace during WWII, but not some doddering old army private who just happened to reach a certain age.. if you get how I mean
