New Doctor Who companion to be revealed Saturday *squee*. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-36104565

She had better be cute.

Rumoured to be this Indian cutie:

Not quite in Jenna's league (who could be?) but not bad. Has anyone seen her in anything? Can she actually act?

UPDATE: The bad news is her experience is mostly limited to soapies. The good news is she sees Marion Cotillard as her inspiration, so she she is aiming to emulate the best! http://www.asiana.tv/entertainment/drama-queen

She looks like a girl I dated back in 89/90

Lucky you.

Although she's a lot taller. The one I dated was about 5'1. Rakhee is 5'7" according to her bio

Rumour above completely wrong. It is some not-so-attractive girl named Pearl Mackie: 5hzpdhWD_200x200.jpeg

Ooh, I thought it was Prince for a minute.

"Ok, what Doctor Who needs is a nice new fresh approach. We have carte blanche on a new assistant/companion. Could be a bloke? Nah. Could be an alien? Nah. Could be artificial intelligence? Nah. Could be something we've never seen before? Nah. Could be another girl from London (after all, there's nowhere else in the UK)? Yeah. Make her ethnic though just to help our credentials, we don't want another Rose or Clara. Another Martha, only a bit less? That'll do, sign her up."

Agrred. When Oswin first appeared, I was hoping that the new companion might actually end up being half-Dalek or maybe spend half the series as a Dalek before being turned back in to a human or vice versa.

Of course, even the Victorian iteration of Clara was too daring for the modern show to have as a fulltime companion.

Knowing the new show's approach the only "twist" that might even remotely happen is some "shocking" revelation towards the end of the season that this young black girl was once an old white man timelord like Rassilon or Omega or whoever. She's probably just an average girl from contemporary London though. :(

I really, really, really hope she's a good actress because she doesn't sound like the most thoughtful and eloquent of young ladies judging by this:

Pearl: "Reading the script at the audition I thought Bill was wicked. Fantastically written, cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in I cant wait to bring her to life, and to see how she develops through the series. I always loved stage combat at drama school so I cant wait to get on set and kick some evil monsters into the next dimension! Shooting the trailer was absolutely mental, there were pyro technics and smoke and I met my first Dalek! Im not sure it will ever become the norm seeing crazy monsters on set, but I cannot wait to meet some more! The weirder the better, bring it on!" <_<

No complaints about liking a different sort of companion, I was quite looking forward to Victorian Clara being the companion but alas, and they certainly wouldn't have two blokes and no women on the show as a permanent thing. But that said they're not all from London. Amy was unashamedly Scottish and Jenna's a northerner whose character was from Blackpool (admittedly she lived in London the brief times she was actually there).

As for the new girl, I believe her only tv was an episode of the daytime soap Doctors and otherwise she's worked exclusively in the theatre, currently touring with a production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. If the brief clip we saw is anything to go by her character seems very talkative and not the smartest of cookies. But we won't see her properly until 2017 anyway.
