Guest Davy Jones' Locker Posted March 24, 2010 Slightly off-topic as she is not an Academy Award winner but I have just learned about one French actress, Danielle Darrieux, very famous in her home country, who was born in 1917 putting her up there with Joan Fontaine and Olivia De Havilland. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danielle_Darrieux Judging from her filmography, she is still active but might be an interesting one to watch. Any chance of a UK obit for someone like that? Again, not Hollywood but another one of the same vintage is Barbro Kollberg, who starred in one of Ingmar Bergman's films: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbro_Kollberg Not sure of the chances for a UK obit. That was enough for me to put him on my DDP team, but I still haven't managed to find out quite what is wrong with him.

Any chance of a UK obit for someone like that? Danielle Darrieux was on French chatshow 'Vivement Dimanche' a couple of weeks ago plugging her latest film 'Pièce Montée' and boy am I glad I didn't put her in my deadpool. Other than needing a little help to walk she was in fine fettle. She's still very active and looks and sounds incredible - you'd think she was mid 70s at the most. Of course, at her age a fall or a short illness is all it takes but other than something like that happening, I'd be surprised if she didn't see out her 100. As she was one of Max Ophüls' muses (not to mention playing Catherine Deneuve's mother in no less than four films!) she'll definitely get a UK obit. Another doyen of French cinema, Michel Piccoli (b. 1925, so getting on a bit) was also on 'Vivement Dimanche' the other week too. Again, another not to bother considering at the moment unless he gets ill.

Again, another not to bother considering at the moment unless he gets ill. Thanks for the info, Mrs VT. Here are some more foreign language film possibilities. Firstly, some vintage Japanese actresses, both born in 1920: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Setsuko_Hara http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoshiko_Ōtaka Hara starred in "Tokyo Story" whilst Otaka was in Kurosawa's "Scandal", billed as Shirley Yamaguchi. Next, we have Dora Doll, born in 1922, a well-known German/French actress from gangster and thriller films, such as "Touchez pas au grisbi." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dora_Doll Another French one is Emmanuelle Riva, born 1927, best known for "Hiroshima, Mon Amour", but in many other films. Still seems to be active, so maybe not a good pick just yet but one for future reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmanuelle_Riva Jeanne Moreau is also starting to get long in the tooth, being born in January 1928 but, like Riva, is still very active so probably just another one to bookmark for the moment: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeanne_Moreau Once we reach the early 1930s, a whole string of notable foreign actresses are still with us, including Monica Vitti and Lucia Bose but one worth looking at is Anita Ekberg, who has had some health problems: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_Ekberg "Despite her condition not being considered serious, she has been put under observation in the facility", or so says that oracle of all truth, Wikipedia. lastorders 15 Posted March 24, 2010 I often kick back and relax to an old school Japanese language movie. Tokyo Story is one of my Sunday afternoon faves. A glass of absinthe & tonic balancing on my well upholstered gut. I hope Setsuko makes it. I'll be stunned if she shuffles off this mortal coil at such a tender age. One more older foreign film actress: Annie Girardot, born 1931, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2006. More of a B - film actress. Probably best known for "Traitement de choc" ("Shock Treatment") with highly controversial French film star Alain Delon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Girardot
Guest Davy Jones' Locker Posted March 28, 2010 You might want to have a look over this list of Hollywood types over 100 and over 90. It is fairly up-to-date: http://www.hollywoodmemoir.com/
Guest Davy Jones' Locker Posted March 28, 2010 Most of the ones I provided above are foreign language film stars. Perhaps the moderator could create a separate thread for that topic.
Tomb raider 9 Posted March 28, 2010 Most of the ones I provided above are foreign language film stars. Perhaps the moderator could create a separate thread for that topic. You could do that yourself, DJL... You might have to register, I'm not sure about that, which would add to your respectability anyway. You're a pretty heavy poster right now - which is fine with me, of course - but I'm sure the regulars like to know who they're dealing with.

Octopus of Odstock 2,203 Posted August 9, 2010 Patricia Neal has also suffered depression and anorexia in the past, don't know if that is still relevant though. Well, it probably was, as she's dead. A DDP choice for two teams; 20 Celebrities, Sitting On A Wall, If 1 Got Shot Or.... and Short Distance Clara. Another person from Breakfast at Tiffanys gone. I think Mickey Rooney is the only star from that alive. Hepburn, Peppard, Neal, Cat and Ebsen all gone.

She's a friend of mine and we're having our own little competition. It also gives me another reason to dislike Patrcia Neal besides her pro-life, pro-ana stance. I only knew about her because I bought a cheap boxed set of 1970s Alain Delon films a few months ago and decided to look up all of the actors and actresses in them at the time but yesterday afternoon, on a sudden impulse, I went and bought the counterpart set of 1970s Jean-Paul Belmondo flicks. I'd better check out the actress in those ones, too...

That was enough for me to put him on my DDP team, but I still haven't managed to find out quite what is wrong with him. I never did find out what was wrong with John Calley, so I reluctantly dropped him from this year's DDP entry. According to his Wiki page, he made this cryptic statement last year when he won his Oscar: You’re very unhappy for a long period of time. And you don’t experience joy. At the end you experience relief, if you’re lucky. That could mean anything from mild depression to terminal cancer. If anyone ever finds out what's bothering him, please let us know.
