Slightly off-topic as she is not an Academy Award winner but I have just learned about one French actress, Danielle Darrieux, very famous in her home country, who was born in 1917 putting her up there with Joan Fontaine and Olivia De Havilland.

Danielle Darrieux was on French chatshow 'Vivement Dimanche' a couple of weeks ago plugging her latest film 'Pièce Montée' and boy am I glad I didn't put her in my deadpool. Other than needing a little help to walk she was in fine fettle. She's still very active and looks and sounds incredible - you'd think she was mid 70s at the most. Of course, at her age a fall or a short illness is all it takes but other than something like that happening, I'd be surprised if she didn't see out her 100. As she was one of Max Ophüls' muses (not to mention playing Catherine Deneuve's mother in no less than four films!) she'll definitely get a UK obit.

 

Another doyen of French cinema, Michel Piccoli (b. 1925, so getting on a bit) was also on 'Vivement Dimanche' the other week too. Again, another not to bother considering at the moment unless he gets ill.

I only knew about her because I bought a cheap boxed set of 1970s Alain Delon films a few months ago and decided to look up all of the actors and actresses in them at the time but yesterday afternoon, on a sudden impulse, I went and bought the counterpart set of 1970s Jean-Paul Belmondo flicks. I'd better check out the actress in those ones, too...

I never did find out what was wrong with John Calley, so I reluctantly dropped him from this year's DDP entry. According to his Wiki page, he made this cryptic statement last year when he won his Oscar:

 

You’re very unhappy for a long period of time. And you don’t experience joy. At the end you experience relief, if you’re lucky

.

 

That could mean anything from mild depression to terminal cancer. If anyone ever finds out what's bothering him, please let us know.
