Windsor 2,230 Posted June 9, 2008 As I walk the dof every night, I pass a petrol station and look at the numbers on the board. Recently they have shot up quite quickly over a small period of time. As a sign of how sad I actually am, this got me thinking - how does this compare to other parts of the UK? Then I thought, what better sample than the members of deathlist (yes I am aware that many of the members live outside the UK (they can join in as well to point out how much we are being ripped off)). If not, how can you be ripped off? Is this the Scotsman's lament? There is an argument that skyrocketing fossil fuels will spur new developments in fuels and energy use. Knock yourself out W It's a not so gentle reminder that there is a finite supply of crude oil and it's about time governments stepped up their spending powers towards finding suitable alternative energy sources (and paying scientists handsomely to do so!). A tiny part of the trouble is the western world naively didn't account for the rapid development of countries like India and China in their consumation versus reserves calculations. Hopefully this price hike might make us (that includes you CA ) think twice before we get into our cars. There is a world of public transport out there and then there is the free transport that is cunningly attached to our legs which may or may not help when we have dofs to walk. Windsor 2,230 Posted June 9, 2008 Windsor are you actually using this fuel? If not, how can you be ripped off? As a driver of a diesel car I don't look at the prices because it only upsets me. The bus price between Aberdeen and Fraserburgh went up by 90p last week. It is now up to 12.70 for a one day return. Technically I'm also being ripped off by the increases in food prices...a cause of which is the price of fuel. Finally, I was just trying to make general conversation. Sorry... I am sick to the back f*****g teeth of the "We are all doomed" brigade and how we are all killers because we CHOOSE to drive instead of getting public transport. I have to drive, period, however Lady FN gets the bus to work everyday. Let me tell you, if she could drive, she would. Exactly where is the pleasure or convenience in having to board a bus with the local nutter, the halitosis kid and a general bunch of Waynettas resplendent in slept in clothes, greasy hair and gobs which, at 8.00am every morning can only manage the expletives "C'mere you little C**t to their child, whos barely old enough to walk? FACT. The brits dont do public transport unless they have to. Its overpriced, dirty, smelly and not door to door, oh and its generally frequented ( if you live up here) by no marks who only use it to pop into town to spend their dole money on 8 Ace. Thats the thing about our local transport system, its designed to convey those that cannot afford to run cars, which will be the effing lot of us if this Government remains in power much longer. Ive lived in Europe, different ball game, different culture. The Oil is not about to run out anytime soon, the Saudis are upping production and if the Chancellor has any gonads he will jump all over those city tossers who are as much to blame for the price going through the roof as demand is. You know what the biggest joke is? The infant mortality rate in parts of India is worse than Africa ( its all over the TV). At the moment babies are starving, so much for Indias rapid economic development. Fuel has gone through the roof because it is highly taxed. No room for manouvre when the sh*t hits the fan, no reduction in duty, no bog all. I use Public transport if I really have to, nothing would make me want to. Lets put it this way, some here value their anonymity, no meet for them, ever. Thats something I utterly respect, there is an issue of privacy and not wanting to step off the plank to go deeper into something they may not feel comfortable with or just plain not like. Whats exactly so different in not wanting to share my arse space with a two ton, flatulent smello on my journey to work/town or anywhere else? Am I not entitled to my own private space? Isnt that what a Motor car gives us? Having a complete stranger invade your space is a human no, no, public transport for me is a no, no. Manchester, apparently, is going to go for gold with a congestion charging scheme. They say that they will be investing around three billion on the public transport infastructure. Oh yeah? where they going to get the money from? It did make me giggle when it was announced that people would be charged £2 to enter, of course that would be £2 in 2009, £4 in 2010 and so on............. Madame Defarge 21 Posted June 10, 2008 I really enjoyed that rant LFN even though (or possibly because) you sound a little bit like I had a car but unfortunately it died and so I either walk, take the bus or get a ride to wherever I have to go.The riders on my bus aren't nearly as loathsome as the ones you describe although obviously I haven't exactly seen Prince Charles or Camilla or any of their friends trying to balance themselves while holding on to a to a greasy strap as my dear bus lurches up a hill! I don't much like taking the bus either, but for another reason: I have to make sure I get to bus stop #2 in time to make my connection. This is in direct conflict to my rather Mediterranean sense of time, but it's something I will have to put up with for a bit. What passes for it takes over three hours to get from one end of Dallas to the other, which I can do on back roads during rush hour in less than an hour. Most of the transit system is concentrated to getting people to downtown Dallas and around the poorer parts of the city. To use Dallas Area Rapid Transit to get to a location halfway between me and downtown Dallas I would have to take an "express" bus to the downtown Dallas transit center and then backtrack 20 miles north - which is back from the direction whence I came - to reach my destination. That would take 90 minutes to get to somewhere I can drive to in less than half an hour. Not very rapid or convenient - nor does it qualify as transit, in my opinion, but no one asked for my input when they named the system. I have started limiting my driving, carpooling and such but I'm afraid that as long as I live here I'm connected to my Jeep, spark plug wire to bellybutton. Gas here is hovering around $3.85/gallon for regular unleaded to $4.30/gallon for premium. It's usually a little cheaper in Texas because our fuel taxes are lower than most states. Diesel is up to around $5.00/gallon. The surcharge the Department of Transportation allows trucking companies to charge to cover the cost of fuel is up to 38%. Grocery prices are skyrocketing. It's usually a little cheaper in Texas because our fuel taxes are lower than most states. Diesel is up to around $5.00/gallon. And for those of you playing along at home, that's about US$1.02 per litre for unleaded and US$1.32 per litre for diesel. Which according to my calculations is about 52p per litre for unleaded and 67p per litre for diesel. It's about AU$1.50 for unleaded here in Oz at the moment, which is around 72p per litre. It's about time but when will the time come where those "alternatives" become available? Are we looking at 25 years? What is the estimate? I'm asking myself if available is the word because now a word called "affortable" is in mind so we are not only in need for more resources, but we need a source which is affortable. The concept of (using public transporation instead) is also very expensive depending on the location and service. A Taxi in the city is outrageous for example (and in most areas) people don't even have the option to say (I'll take the bus which is contaminated with disease) or the subway which might be a cheaper way (but have fun standing up) .. The whole reason prices are insane (In the US) is because of the money it costs to stay in Iraq and babysit a variety of minor organazations which are built up of some religious bullshit. Since it didn't, the f*cking extra work I will have to do to pay it will! P.S. A mate of mine's brother buys those huge big tins of cooking oil like they have in chip shops and uses it pure. He's at 400,000Km and still running fine, so it must be all right.
