time 8,614 Posted January 13, 2018 Fifty years ago, Minnesota North Stars player Bill Masterton became the first, and to-date only, NHL player to die as a result of an in-play injury. He died two days after being checked during play against the Oakland Seals, aged 29. It was his death that opened the debate on making the wearing of helmets compulsory. The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is presented each year in his memory. A short film about him and the incident.
TQR 14,398 Posted January 13, 2018 A tad out there, but bear with me, I quite like history. The Carolingian Emperor and King of, as it were, France, died on this day 1,130 years ago. The great-grandson of the renown Frankish King and everybody's daddy, Charlemagne, he was rather a maladroit regal figure; he was always, always ill, so was seen as rather a weak representative by surrounding regions. He tried to keep the peace with the same bunch of pillaging Vikings that acquired much loot from the large city of Paris just before he succeeded to the throne, which went so well he subsequently oversaw the Siege of Paris, essentially a 9th century version of a thermonuclear takeover. This is about 4 years after he failed his own poxy attempt at a siege on a Provencale nobleman. He only had one 'heir', who ultimately wasn't actually accepted as such thanks to his unfortunate illegitimacy. Soon after he gave up on his mission to get his bastard son to the throne, his marriage failed, his support in the Kingdom of the East Franks flatlined, his nephew formed a Germanic-stemmed rebellion against this sorry excuse of a ruler and the poor old incumbent was too ill and inept to do anything about it. He died at his German retreat aged 48, six weeks after his reign of East & West Francia, Aquitaine, Alemannia, Italy and the Romans all collapsed in November 887. Subsequently, all regions he once reigned split into five less truculent successor kingdoms, so his deposition was very much a vast turning point in the Frankish empire, and a step towards the France we know and hate today. His name? Charles the Fat.
