Stan Freberg, song parodist whom Weird Al Yankovic cited as one of his biggest influences, died on this day 7 years ago, aged 88.

 

Freberg was also notably the voice of Pete Puma in Looney Tunes cartoons from his introduction in 1952 to 2000.

On this day in the year  2000  Oscar winning actress Claire Trevor  died aged 90.

She won best supporting actress  for  her role in Key Largo in the 1940s  which she costarred with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. 

She starred in numerous other films including Stagecoach with John Wayne were she actually was given higher billing than him and Honky Tonk alongside Clark Gable and Lana Turner.

Margaret's brothers  predeceased  her so her  daughter inherited the throne and  became Queen of  Scotland.

Its 44 years since Sir Clough Williams-Ellis died aged 94. He's chiefly remembered for designing the Welsh village of Portmeirion, location for the TV series The Prisoner.

Also a noted conservationist he was instrumental in setting up the National Parks system post-war.

Isn't it a little unfair to pin the blame on Hell? Everyone has an opinion on how we should announce birthdays, but there's a lack of consensus in this thread. It appears no one discussed how many people should be in a post, or switching from "Peter Falk died" to "Peter Falk stopped suffering from Alzheimer's disease" to "no more acting for Peter Falk" and back to "Peter Falk died".

Does anyone else post lots of old deaths in one go?  Posting every one they can find?

Surely it should be selective, picking one person that interests you.   And posting so many at once increases the risk of repetition.

I agree, but I don't sense much of a personal connection between posters and the anniversary they're posting. It seems more like it's done out of obligation. Of course you don't have to explain Prince Philip's first anniversary, but at least explain why some politician dying 23 years ago is significant to you.

On this day in 2014  british author and journalist  Sue Townsend  , best known for her iconic childrens book series the Adrian Mole diaries- a  fictional, witty , observant satire   on the life  of teenager Adrian  Mole and then Adrian as an adult.

The first book was set in the 1960s but the books themselves  seemed to really capture the zeitgeist in the UK in the 1980s.

Sue was 68 when she died.

Scottish painter and musician best known as the original bass guitarist of the English rock band the Beatles Stuart Sutcliffe died on this day 60 years ago, aged 21.

Pope Gregory XIII died on this day 437 years ago, aged 83.

In 1582, noticing how the spring equinox occurred well ahead of March 21 (leap years occurred every 3 years), Gregory devised the Gregorian calendar as an updated version of the Julian calendar used at the time. This was due to the fact that the spring equinox was used to calculate which date Easter would occur on any given year.

Gregory introduced the calendar in October of that year, skipping the dates of October 5 to 14. Most of the world currently uses this calendar.
