Pope Formosus died on this day 1126 years ago, aged 80.

His afterlife was probably much more interesting:

 

In January 897, due to politically-motivated reasons (it was believed that Formosus invited Arnold of Carinthia to overthrow king Lambert of Italy), Pope Stephen VI ordered his body exhumed and put on trial. This trial was known as the Cadaver Synod. Formosus was found guilty, and the actions that he decreed during his papacy were nullified. Formosus' corpse was thrown into the River Tiber, which was then recovered (some people even reported his body had performed miracles) and re-interred at St. Peter's Basilica.

The Cadaver Synod was later declared void by Popes Theodore II and John IX, but overturned by Pope Sergius III (who had served as a judge in the trial). All of Sergius' successors as pope have reaffirmed that the Cadaver Synod is invalid.

On this day in 2005  Rainier III Prince of Monaco  died aged 81. He had reigned over Monaco since 1949  and was famously married to Hollywood legend Grace Kelly  aka Princess Grace who died in a car accident in 1982.

28 years since the assasination of Juvénal Habyarimana and Cyprien Ntaryamira.

 

Juvénal Habyarimana (1937-1994), in the second picture, was the President of Rwanda from 1973 to 1994.

Cyprien Ntaryamira (1955-1994) was the President of Burundi from February to April 1994.

This assasination started the Rwandan genocide that began the next day. More about it the assasination here.

Also as far as I know the only time two incumbent Heads of State have been killed at the same time.

I always suspected that he died a bit earlier but they kept him on ice for a few days before announcing it, so as not to be overshadowed by the Pope.
