Unlikely Pearly-gates mates number 43, both dying 41 years ago today -

Prince Asaka Yasuhiko, at age 93, and               Joe Louis, at age 66.

Prince Asaka Yasuhiko.jpg  Joe Louis by van Vechten.jpg

Prince Asaka was a member of the Japanese ruling family and had control over Japanese forces at the time of the Nanking massacre; whether or not he personally ordered the massacre is still debated, but he was never charged thanks to MacArthur agreeing on immunity for the Japanese Imperial family.

Joe Louis, The Brown Bomber, is generally recognised as one of the greatest boxers to have lived, having had 25 consecutive successful title defences.

Both Asaka & Louis loved golf.

Post-war, he became an ordinary citizen when branches of the Imperialist family were abolished, and spent much time playing golf, becoming involved with golf course design. Louis was introduced to the sport in the 30's prior to his first fight against Max Schmeling, and spent mush of the time he should have been training playing golf instead. He was instrumental in breaking the colour bar when he was granted a 'sponsor's exemption' to a PGA event in 1952.

Queen Juana of Castile died on this day 467 years ago, aged 75.

The Madness of Juana of Castile - The Tudor Society

Juana was also known by her epithet "The Mad". Historians believe that she was diagnosed with depression following the death of her mother (Queen Isabella I) in 1504, and then the death of her husband and co-monarch Philip I in 1506. She travelled with her husband's funeral procession (from Burgos to Granada, a 668 km/415 mi journey), and reportedly kissed Philip's lifeless body.

Upon her death, her son (also co-monarch, who had confined her in the Royal Palace due to her "illness") Charles I united Spain and the Holy Roman Empire (the latter of which he ruled over since his grandfather Maximilian I's death in 1519), giving the Habsburg family control over a large swath of Europe. This dynasty would rule Spain until 1700.

Starting kind of my own side thing here, called "Driver death of the day" in which I'm gonna post about some random race car driver somewhere who died on this day starting from today until the end of the year. I might miss couple of days in between.

Today's driver featured is Markus Hottinger, who died 42 years ago on this day in 1980 in a racing accident at Hockenheim.

Singer and actor Burl Ives died on this day 27 years ago, aged 85.

image.jpeg.41c899e7522f2fb442344c655bb3e4de.jpeg

Ives is probably best remembered for being the narrator (as the character of Sam the Snowman) of the 1964 Christmas classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and sang several songs for the TV movie.

Ives was also the base for the Ren and Stimpy character Stinky Wizzleteats, who is referred to as "Burl Ives" in the episode "Stimpy's Invention"'s script. Several of Ives' quotes can be heard in this song from the show:

Emma Morano, the last surviving person born in the 1800s, died on this day 5 years ago, aged 117.

image.jpeg.825624632d86bc03ed37ae3f9dbbeaa7.jpeg

At the time of her death, she was the fourth-oldest person to have ever lived. (Lucy Hannah, a validated case at the time who was claimed to be older than Morano, has since been debunked- Morano was initially believed to have been the fifth-oldest)

To put things in perspective now, she is the eighth-oldest person to have ever lived.
