Peter Mayhew died on this day 4 years ago, aged 74.

- Mayhew was diagnosed with gigantism at the age of 8, and reached the height of 7 foot 3 (2.2 meters).

- Mayhew's first role he was hired for was as Minoton the robot minotaur in the film Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger- he got the role after one of the producers found him from a newspaper article about men with large feet (no clue why they chose him for that over his height). The film, however, was released a few months after the first Star Wars film.

- Initially, Chewbacca was to be portrayed by David Prowse- who became the man in the Darth Vader suit (with James Earl Jones providing his iconic voice). Mayhew got the role after standing up in front of George Lucas, and Mayhew studied the behaviors of bears, monkeys and gorillas to inspire his performance.

- Most of Mayhew's roles following this were Chewbacca, but there were some exceptions. He played a mechanic in the 1978 film Terror, and the villain in 2008's Yesterday Was a Lie. Mayhew even got into voice acting, providing the voice of Susha in the English dub of Dragon Ball GT: A Hero's Legacy.

- Outside of Star Wars properties, Mayhew would portray the character in several television shows, ranging from The Muppet Show to Glee.

- Mayhew became a naturalized American citizen in 2005.

Emily Stowe died 120 years ago at the age of 71, she was the first woman to practice medicine in Canada, the country's second licensed physician and an activist for women's rights and suffrage.

Olympia Dukakis died on this day 2 years ago, aged 89.

- Dukakis was the first cousin of former Massachusetts governor and 1988 Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis (who I'd say is likely to make his DeathList debut within three years).

- Dukakis started as an off-Broadway theatre actress in 1961, winning the Obie Award for Best Actress in 1963 for Man Equals Man.

- Dukakis would then make appearances in films such as Death Wish and National Lampoon's Movie Madness.

- In 1987, Dukakis starred in Moonstruck as the mother of Cher's character; she would win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (as well as the Golden Globe Award).

- Beyond that, she was known for her roles in Steel Magnolias and Mr. Holland's Opus, and made appearances in TV shows such as Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, the Tales of the City miniseries, and even The Simpsons.

- Dukakis died about six weeks before her 90th birthday.

Paul Joseph Goebbels committed suicide on this day 78 years ago, aged 47. His wife, Magda, and his six children, Hildegard; Helga; Helmut; Hedwig; Heidrun; and Holdine, died alongside him (his wife by suicide and his children by homicide).

Throughout his life, David Livingstone undertook several missionary expeditions through the interior of the African continent, many of which were the first white men to have visited certain regions of Africa.

140 years ago Qorpo Santo died, José Joaquim de Campos Leão was a playwright, poet, journalist, typographer and Brazilian grammarian, his work A Separação de Dois Esposos ends with a dialogue that is at least quite unusual for its time and place , which takes place between Tatu and Tamanduá, decidedly the first gay couple in Brazilian dramaturgy. The author added the nickname of Qorpo-Santo, so that his work gained recognition due to the efforts of many intellectuals who wanted to work in the 1960s.

He acted for Troyes, Nancy, Monaco, Lille and Cannes, in addition to Servette (SUI), he had a long career, from 62 to 86, I thought he was better known

Leonardo da Vinci died on this day 504 years ago, aged 67.

- Da Vinci was left-handed, and he would often write backwards, with the letters mirrored. It is believed that a stroke paralyzed his right hand.

- Not only was da Vinci passionate about art, but he also loved music. He was a flautist and lyrist, and even wrote some of his own music.

- In 1476, da Vinci was charged with sodomy (involving a male prostitute)- the case was dismissed due to lack of evidence.

- Da Vinci was rivals with Michelangelo- the latter criticized the former for failing to finish his works, while Da Vinci criticized how muscular Michelangelo's statues were.

- Da Vinci moved out of Florence in 1516 after king Francis I of France invited him to become his "Premier Painter and Engineer and Architect".

- Da Vinci specifically wanted to be buried at the Château d'Amboise, which was fulfilled. The chateau was largely destroyed during Napoleon's rise to power, and it is believed that some of da Vinci's bones were moved following its destruction.

George Murphy died on this day 31 years ago, aged 89.

- Murphy's first film role was as Jerry Lane in 1934's Kid Millions.

- Murphy soon starred in many musicals in the late '30s and early '40s, such as the Broadway Melody series.

- Murphy was the president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1944 to 1946, succeeding James Cagney.

- He was awarded an Honorary Academy Award in 1951, having never been nominated for an Oscar.

- Murphy retired from acting once he turned 50, and immediately turned to politics- he joined the Republican Party, and organized the entertainment for the Eisenhower campaign.

- In 1964, Murphy would be elected as a senator from California by just over 200,000 votes- a 51-48% margin. Shortly before the election, Murphy made a controversial statement regarding Mexican farm laborers in the US- "They are built low to the ground, you see, so it is easier for them to stoop". That led to this song being made:

 

- Murphy would sneak candy into his Senate desk, which he would share with colleagues (despite eating being prohibited in Congress). This has since become a tradition for Republican senators; Murphy bequeathed it to Arizona senator Paul Fannin after leaving office, and it would only be publicly revealed by Washington senator Slade Gorton in 1985. Its current owner is Indiana senator Todd Young, who took it earlier this year (after Pennsylvania senator Pat Toomey's retirement).

- Murphy would be diagnosed with throat cancer during his term, and had a part of his larynx removed.

- Ronald Reagan got into politics thanks to Murphy- he called him his "John the Baptist".

- Murphy lost re-election in 1970 due to his support of the Vietnam War and his cancer scare. He would retire to Florida, where he spent the last 22 years of his life.

On this day 1 year ago, American politician Norman Mineta, who was a California representative from 1975 to 1993 and the Secretary of Transportation from 2001 to 2006, passed away at the age of 90.

The Beatles wrote a song for her, which was included in their Oscar-winning film Let it Be.

She starred in the famous Twilight Zone episode "Number 12 Looks Like You" as Number 12 and many of the other female roles.

Dom DeLuise died on this day 14 years ago, aged 75.

- DeLuise first gained attention for his role in 1966's The Glass Bottom Boat- the film received mixed reviews, but many critics noted his talent.

- DeLuise became a staple actor in many of two directors' films- first was Mel Brooks. He played characters such as Pizza the Hutt in Spaceballs, Nero in History of the World, Part I, Buddy Bizarre in Blazing Saddles, and Don Giovanni in Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

- The other director was Don Bluth; he lent his voice to Tiger in An American Tail, Stanley the Troll in A Troll in Central Park, Jeremy the crow in The Secret of NIMH, and Itchy in All Dogs Go to Heaven (the latter of which he starred opposite of longtime collaborator Burt Reynolds).

- Outside of Bluth's films, DeLuise would also be known for voice roles such as Fagin in Oliver and Company, Koosalagoopagoop (Dee Dee's recurring imaginary friend) in Dexter's Laboratory, and Christopher Columbus in The Magic Voyage (yes, people actually made an animated Columbus film for kids- and this is a scene from it).

- DeLuise would also write several children's books and cookbooks.
