Canadian Paul 97 Posted November 29, 2005 Here's what seems to be the consensus for the 39 folks who are still on this year's deathlist. Not to say that I personally agree with all of this, I'm just trying to synthesize (someone in my Arabic class today said they wanted to study with me because "white people are so organized." Go figure. ) ADD TO NEXT YEAR'S LIST Ronnie Biggs Patrick Moore Joseph Barbera Michael Foot (GR's insistance) General Pinochet REMOVE FROM NEXT YEAR'S LIST Albert Hoffman Norman Wisdom Alexander Solzhenitsyn Hamed Karzai Diego Maradona Frankie Laine Jane Wyman Eli Wallach Les Paul Olivia De Havilland Walter Cronkite Herbert Lom Fidel Castro Jerry Lewis NO CLEAR DECISION/DISCUSSION Brooke Astor Oscar Niemeyer Claude Lévi-Strauss John Kenneth Galbraith Ernest Gallo Al Lewis Elizabeth Taylor Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Claire Rayner Byron Nelson Richard Pryor Milton Friedman Bill Deedes Gerald Ford Jake Lamotta Tony Martin PW Botha Betty Ford Kurt Waldheim (After 7 pages of useless bickering) Peter O'Sullevan In other words, there's much discussion to be had, but I think one more off the list will die before the year is off. Tempus Fugit 214 Posted November 29, 2005 I think every DeathList should have on it, One religious leader. One old Nazi. One old communist And Clive Dunn.
millwall32 114 Posted November 29, 2005 George Best ( and a bloody good job too). Tp paraphrase Spike Milligan- I told you he was ill.
sympathyforthedevil 11 Posted November 29, 2005 I think every DeathList should have on it, One religious leader. One old Nazi. One old communist And Clive Dunn. These may fulfil your criteria: Billy Graham. Kurt Waldheim. Fidel Castro (although I don't think he will die for a good few years yet) Clive Dunn. I would also suggest J.D. Salinger, author of "Catcher in the Rye", who turns 87 in January. Clearly getting on in years and lives a rather reclusive lifestyle which means that, were he to become ill, he may not be willing/able to contact the outside world. Just a suggestion. Star Crossed 33 Posted November 29, 2005 how about george best for 2006 if he lives another 3 months. No chance. I reckon he'll be dead by the end of november.
Windsor 2,233 Posted November 29, 2005 NO CLEAR DECISION/DISCUSSION ......John Kenneth Galbraith What are you saying! Banshees has suggested him and so the decision has been made.
BrunoBrimley 86 Posted November 30, 2005 It occurs to me that the title of this thread is not too well thought out. What is this nonsense of serious contenders, aere you implying that there are not serious contenders?
sympathyforthedevil 11 Posted November 30, 2005 It occurs to me that the title of this thread is not too well thought out. What is this nonsense of serious contenders, aere you implying that there are not serious contenders? Well if I suggested the likes of Wayne Rooney or Haley Joel Osment for the list, I doubt these would be considered "serious" contenders.
Paul Bearer 6,101 Posted November 30, 2005 Once again, I'm going to suggest Charlie Drake. Honestly, I don't have a vandetta against him.
Guest Graham Posted November 30, 2005 How about Fred Saberhagen (SF Author) He missed conferences this year because he was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer and would return to conference going when his cancer "was stabalised". Prognosis doesn't sound good for survivng 2006!
Death Watch Beatle 41 Posted November 30, 2005 Quite frankly I'm still smarting over the John DeLorean affair. More than once I went to post about this fraudster and then didn't because I couldn't find any particular news on his health, and then the ungrateful bastard went and died on me. Therefore, not to be caught out twice, DWB's "serious" contender for next year (without very much to go on) is Carroll Shelby - the Mustang muscle car bloke. Pure coincidence that both are car related, let's see how he goes in 2006. DWB
Canadian Paul 97 Posted November 30, 2005 How about Fred Saberhagen (SF Author) He missed conferences this year because he was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer and would return to conference going when his cancer "was stabalised". Prognosis doesn't sound good for survivng 2006! Passes the famous test for me, and by that I mean I know who he is, but I'm not sure if he'd pass it for others or the BBC. Wikipedia confirms our guest's facts, so if he is famous enough, may be worth considering since any cancer that's metastatic has a grim prognosis. Prostate cancer, maybe not so much so as many others, but still a bad outlook. Of course, I still support Pinter as the martyr of the cancer struggle for '06... but they are both of the same age. Canadian Paul 97 Posted November 30, 2005 So, I had two free hours where I couldn't do much, so I compiled a list of celebrities that are not on the current list that we seem to have been seriously considering for one reason or another. Again, my disclaimer is that I neither support nor uh... not support... any of these candidates, just trying to do my thing. This is the list up to October 1st. Of course, most of the best candidates have probably been discussed in more recent times. Anyone else want to spend the next two hours listing those from October 1+? Debra Shipley Betty Friedan Eugene McCarthy Luciano Pavarotti Yitzhak Shamir Robert Sheckley Tammy Faye Bakker Messner Charlton Heston Clive Dunn (of course) Coretta Scott King
Godot 149 Posted December 3, 2005 Harold Pinter, of course, and if he goes I think Lady Antonia Fraser could well make it a double (no scratch that, she'll probably be the merry widow). Joseph Juran Richard Baker I was going to suggest Buzz Aldrin until I saw this: http://www.csicop.org/articles/20021018-aldrin/ Looks like he will be buzzing a few years yet. But it's high time we had an astronaut. Tom Wolfe, not too old but doesn't know how to slow down Tony Benn (had a fall at the last LP conference) Michael Foot (at last) Denis Healey Bill McLaren (rugby commentator) Geoff Boycott (terminal lip collapse) Peter Sallis (Wallace) Acker Bilk Sir Chay Blythe Alan Sillitoe Peter O'Toole (shouldn't really have made it so far) Mollie Sugden (can't be long now)
Tempus Fugit 214 Posted December 3, 2005 A quote from Joseph Jurans Wiki entry, "Juran was known as a business and industrial quality "guru," while making significant contributions to management theory, human resource management and consulting as well. He wrote several books, and known worldwide as one of the most important 20th century thinkers in quality management" I almost fell asleep after the first sentence, dull, dull, dull and DULL. Banshees Scream 110 Posted December 3, 2005 What happens if nobody on the list dies next year? Then we all blame you for jinxing it. The truth can be scary - It is most definitly possible that A list may turn out with perhaps less then 5 deaths? Yes selecting canidates for a list is mainly good knowledge but you must also be lucky. There are never any definite deaths unless A canidate has a fatal disease and even then it is allways possible that canidate may outlive there own expectations. Although with the high quality picks we have made in recent years and now that the selections are being takin more seriously then before I doubt any such thing will happen.
