That's one greenhouse well and truly stoned to death! The level of sanctimoniousness emanating from Mr Quantick is simply breathtaking, so much so that I can hardly convince myself this is for real. His body of work has probably done more to offend people over the years than all of the members here put together will ever manage to achieve. The man should get a grip and drop the affected piety. If he wants to stop some of the offensiveness in this world, then revoloution begins at home, in front of the bathroom mirror. That said, it shouldn't be forgotten that a good friend of his has died and perhaps this shocking dereliction of objectivity on his part is evidence that grief really does cloud judgement to the extent that you can end up behaving like a complete arse. Magere Hein 1,400 Posted August 8, 2010 t shouldn't be forgotten that a good friend of his has died and perhaps this shocking dereliction of objectivity on his part is evidence that grief really does cloud judgement to the extent that you can end up behaving like a complete arse. I've never read anything Mr Quantick has written other his inane tweets, so I don't know how sound his judgement normally is, but I think you've hit the nail smack on the head here. He's obviously not thinking clearly. I attribute his confusion to stupidity rather than malice. Whether his stupidity is grief-induced and temporary or permanent remains to be seen. regards, Hein
themaninblack 2,112 Posted August 8, 2010 Shall I apply the coup de grâce? Underneath my bed is a box. It contains many affects which are a part of my life. One such affect is a copy of the New Musical Express, dated 24th March 1990... In it, there is an article on David Bowie, written in anticpation of his 'Sound and Vision' greatest hits tour that Spring. Entitled A Lad 'N' Fame', it provides an album by album overview and is coupled with another article called '100 Little Gnome Facts'. It was a witty and informative article, which prompted me to explore the career of the Thin White Duke, and very grateful for that I am too. When reviewing his most recent album at that point (the rather ill-concieved Tin Machine project) comes this little gem: ...while the cover of 'Working Class Hero' had John Lennon his way out of the grave to have a word with his old mate. Lennon was dead less than ten years at that point. And the writers of this said article? Terry Staunton and David Quantick as the late Eric Morecambe would say... "Get out of that!" Godot 149 Posted August 9, 2010 Well this thread created quite a frisson on an otherwise quiet weekend in August. To summarise: a chap who has made his name as a comedy writer complained in an email to MIB because his dead friend, another writer/journo turned out to be a successful pick on the DDP. He didn't mind being a pick himself but he thought that the mention of his friend on the DDP site was distressing for his friend's surviving family and wanted the reference removed. There then followed a little bit of a hoohaa on Twitter when one of our members attempted to ascertain that this chap was the genuine article. Other Twitterers who noticed the exchange came on the site for a gander and the original complainant put the boot in to Deathlisters by calling us "anonymous cowards." Then there were various interjections etc. I'm pondering this question: is there a case to answer? On the DDP entry I think not. I'm not sure how I would feel if one of my best friends was in there but I don't think it would bother me. But what if it bothered the said friend's family? One thing I have learned over the years is that most of my friends who know of my deadpooling simply don't get it. They're not all of a rush to get involved. My family who know about it don't get it either. Some friends have had little arguments about it but generally they dismiss it as one of my idiosyncrasies and move on. I even stop myself sometimes and ask what this is all about, but what keeps me here is the banter and the fellowship (that has been a bit thin in the last year), good humour, cleverness and, surprisingly for outsiders perhaps, the strong moral compass and sense of humanity among many who come here and stay. If people are bothered, they can ignore it or they can learn a bit more about it when they will soon cease to be bothered. Neither the DL or the DDP is interested in mocking the dead, well not unless they deserve it. Usually comedians embrace the blackest humour, hence the justifiable accusations of hypocrisy here. Maybe, however, he does have a point with the anonymous cowards remark. When I came on here it was convention to use a nickname and avatar on forums and it still is as far as I know. Given that my own friends and family don't understand what I'm up to here, including some who think it's all a bit sick, It seems reasonable to assume the same reactions might be encountered elsewhere. I don't much care about that but it makes life easier to be anonymous as long as you use your anonymity responsibly. I think most of us here don't like "glad they're dead" or "hope they die" posts. But it's a free forum that is self-policing and anyone is entitled to join. I don't go out of my way to hide my deadpooling but nor do I tell everyone I meet. In the same way if I was gay I wouldn't try to hide it but I wouldn't announce to everyone that I was "the only gay in the village." Besides my mum keeps a close watch on this site and wouldn't allow anything too rum. She is not a David Quantick fan but notes he's from Yorkshire which led her to suggest he might be a chapeller "which would explain a lot," she says. PS. Should the DL have it's own Twitter account? PPS: It appears that Quantick is a fan of the Goodies. Enough said, with the honorable exception of Graham Garden's and Tim Brooke-Taylor's much funnier contributions to I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. PPPS: This post is far too long. Sorry, but I have a lot to do today and this is where I come to procrastinate.
Rotten Ali 600 Posted August 9, 2010 I just wondered who on the DDP picked David Quantick - seeing as I'm not aware of any thing significantly wrong with him - so I had a look. Cut & Paste of the team in question and an overview if other names on the team make any sense. Cut Price Funerals Years in DDP: 3 Best position: 269th= (2009) Muhammad Ali Richard Baker Derek Batey Jack Charlton Liz Dawn Ronnie James Dio Michael Foot John Hartson Kenneth Kendall Ray Kennedy Joe Kinnear Sheila Mercier Bill Pertwee John Prescott David Quantick Dennis Skinner Phil Spector Margaret Thatcher Charlie Watts Jimmy Young Hits with Dio (shows the entrant has been watching form of late) & Michael Foot (old time favourite) What's easy to see is there is a left wing old Labour slant. Skinner (not a lot wrong with him) Prescott (ditto) and the afore named M. Foot. On the right wing we get MT and most teams feature her than not. Four footballers are featured - Charlton (had a bit of a medical issue). Hartson would be an obvious one but Kinnear? His heart could go any time in the next ten years so that's wde of the mark for me. RK's been ill for a long time and could last any number of years yet, as too could Ali. Music - Dio, ok pick but Spector will be inside for a whole raft of years - crazy choice! Watts, well over the minor cancer. News readers feature twice, Kendall & Baker are not that ill that I know off and both I'm sure will die of old age. Same could be said of Radio 2's Jimmy Young. Old time TV features favourite Liz Dawn but why Derek Batey? (maybe some inside info?) Same with Bill Pertwee. Now I didn't know Sheila Mercier - so will had to do a big of further digging - again old time TV lady, this time Emmerdale - but like David Quantick a person from the Yorkshire areas. Now another feature being only 3 female picks - that I think is a low down that the entrant is male and has either a male bias of some Alpha male sort or is in fact gay. Now I don't know Sheila Mercier - so will have to do a big of further digging. So why is Quantick on this team? I think there is half a chance it is DQ himself or someone who knows him well enough to dislike him. And that in essence maybe his beef - "who the hell do I know, who hates me enough to list me on here and see me dead?" So David, the guy who is going to punch your lights out will be a hatefull Lib-Dem supporting male from the Yorkshire TV newsroom who likes music, football, and is not very good at deadpooling! Simples.
honez 79 Posted August 9, 2010 And that in essence maybe his beef - "who the hell do I know, who hates me enough to list me on here and see me dead?" It's fairly safe to assume the person's initials aren't SW, with easily-offended relatives.
Spade_Cooley 9,513 Posted August 9, 2010 Feeling the cut of Ali's gib on this one, but if you wanna put the wankhat on (and, really, what are message boards other than places to don the wankhat?), when an "educated" person first gets introduced to deadpooling, they do tend to name a team that combines the notable elderly and "ill in the news" with a mixture of "random celebrity names". So they'll have put together this year, say, a MacCorkindale and a Robert Mark with, idk, Brent Spiner and Trevor Sinclair.

DevonDeathTrip 2,358 Posted August 9, 2010 .. and the original complainant put the boot in to Deathlisters by calling us "anonymous cowards." Then there were various interjections etc. I agree with most of what you say Godot, but he did more than call us anonymous cowards. He referred to us, via twitter, as 'students' and, perhaps worse still, 'scum'. Now call me old fashioned, but I feel that the term 'scum' should only be used to describe the real dregs of society - child pornographers, cannibals, politicians, that sort of thing - rather than honest, taxpaying, gainfully employed deadpoolers, who wish harm on virtually nobody. Nevertheless, we should forgive David Quantick for his slurs, as it does nobody any good to bear a grudge, a fact he may wish to ponder over before he considers doing a hatchet job on us. I presume that he is merely freelance and not on the DT payroll in any shape or form? Just wondering, like...

I presume that he is merely freelance and not on the DT payroll in any shape or form? Just wondering, like... Students? The shame of it. Scum - well he probably didn't mean it. Yup, I'm the forgiving type. Sherlock RA has got me scuttling off to my pisspoor DDP team to count the girlies and check if I'm on the right side of the pink line - only just duckie, with four women. RA does have a point. Why on earth did Cut Price Funerals enter Quantick? In RA's sleuthing haven't noticed much focus on Now That's What I Call Significant who came =9th in his/her first year in the DDP with 9 successful picks, including Wells as a unique pick. Is RA suggesting that NTWICS could be Mr Q who now feels remorseful or who is guiltily trying to put someone off the scent? In short is something fishy going on? Instead of casting aspersions at our good selves, perhaps Quantick should be having a look at his own circle of friends and acquaintances and ask himself who might have used privileged knowledge to enter their mutual buddy. Maybe Wells entered himself. I know I'd be tempted to do that if I was feeling a bit peaky, looking for a posthumous win (but risking an obit no show) . I wouldn't put it past the luvvie types to compete among each other to be on the DPP as a kind of mark of having made it. Re DT, I'm as certain as I can be he's not on their payroll.
Rotten Ali 600 Posted August 9, 2010 Don't think Wells entered himself since both NTWICS & CPF are still playing in 2010.... Now That's What I Call Significant 2010 Years in DDP: 2 Best position: 9th= (2009) Made an excellent debut in 2009. Can they improve in 2010? Vasily Aleksanyan Abdelbaset Al Megrahi Melissa Bell Stefano Borgonovo Ronnie James Dio Sara Douglass Doug Fieger Laurent Fignon Shaun Greatbatch Johnny Hallyday Genaro Hernandez Alan Igglesden Mike Marqusee Simon MacCorkindale Ndayé Mulamba Sara Payne Zelda Rubinstein Mel Sterland Zeljko Sturanovic Anne-Marie van Kesteren And already doing quite well, with 3 hits. Now That's What I Call SIGNIFICANT 2009 First year in DDP. Vasily Aleksanyan Susan Atkins Seve Ballesteros Paul Birch Paul Gascoigne Jade Goody Michael Jackson Steve Jobs Kerry Katona Sir Dai Llewellyn Peter Macbeth Iain McColl Wendy Richard Kenny Richey Sir Bobby Robson Mel Sterland Patrick Swayze Linda Uttley Steven Wells Amy Winehouse That was a really good team too. Even joined the other 8 teams in missing out on points for not having Linda Uttley get a top line obit. I do think Godot, you may have something in this "fishy business" line of study. It's not for us to know but TMIB may have a sneek at the IP addresses to see who sent in these teams in question and whether they tally back to the Quantick Emails or somewhere else. Ho hum. themaninblack 2,112 Posted August 9, 2010 Anonymity is part and parcel of the internet. I'm pretty sure the vast majority of DQ's obsequious twitter following were using assumed names, adding to the hypocrisy by agreeing sagely with the hack on this very issue. The original request was polite enough but it was when he started whining about it to his media cronies and acolytes which irritated me. He decided to get on his high horse, but when the evidence of his hypocrisy stacked up against him more than Goering at Nuremburg, he then made a tactical withdrawal. I think RA's got to the root of the issue. It's not about Swells, it's about DQ. He's curious/confused as to why he's on there and has used the old friends/family disgust as a bit of a cover. It's interesting that he gets himself out of the way first in the message, almost to divert me from it. His ego's taken a bruising and he lashed out. Funny to think that he's been involved in British popular culture for the best part of 30 years, only to find himself out of his depth here...

Godot 149 Posted August 9, 2010 So, in summary, a lot of fuss over nothing. Quite so LFN, but a little more interesting than some Mr Obscurity death posting that too often is what passes for entertainment here these days. Why not switch over to 101 and Windsor's Boys' Brigade birthday snub rant? It kept me amused for a while. But then I was soooooo bored.
Rotten Ali 600 Posted August 9, 2010 So here we have the previous two team entries by the person behind the listing of David Quantick this year. 2009 team: Cut Price Funerals Years in DDP: 2 Best position: 342nd= (2008) Richard Baker Derek Batey Jack Charlton Sheryl Crow Liz Dawn John Forsythe Julie Goodyear Steve Jobs Kenneth Kendall Nelson Mandela Sheila Mercier Kylie Minogue Prince Philip Colin Powell Sir Bobby Robson Suzanne Somers Patrick Swayze Margaret Thatcher Charlie Watts Jimmy Young 2008 team: Co-Op Funerals (Name changed) First year in DDP. Richard Baker Derek Batey George W. Bush (jnr) Liz Dawn Pete Doherty Bruce Forsyth John Forsythe Sir Geoff Hurst Kenneth Kendall Joe Kinnear Nelson Mandela Sheila Mercier Prince Philip John Prescott Sir Bobby Robson Patricia Routledge Ed Stewart Margaret Thatcher Ricky Tomlinson Jimmy Young Now this one had zero hits - that takes a bit of doing! Handrejka 1,903 Posted August 9, 2010 To be honest they probably just wanted a name beginning with Q for whatever reason. I don't think anything can be read into their other picks. We should probably draw a line under this now really, he still thinks we're cowards, we still think he's a hypocrit and Steven Wells is still dead.

Spade_Cooley 9,513 Posted August 9, 2010 Q-Tip's obituary in the round-up DDP emails would presumably be "Breathe... and stop". Low-end irony of all this is that I had a lengthy email correspondence with Swells in late 08/early 09. I think he respected my hustle.
maryportfuncity 10,630 Posted August 13, 2010 Missed all this mirth whilst on my holidays. Thought I'd throw in my observations for what they're worth. I knew Swells and had some professional dealings with the great man over the years, can't imagine the author of a masterpiece like Tits-Out Teenage Terror Totty would have a problem with being listed in a deadpool hall of fame. He faced mortality full-on in his final paid pieces of writing. Assuming Quantick is the real deal, he has a point, but anyone related to Swells would hardly be a stranger to the extreme end of the media both official or unofficial. And few in the nineties did more than Brass Eye to blur the boundaries between celebrity/ignominy bad taste/humour. Should the creature claiming to be Quantick cross our paths again it would be worth questioning exactly where he thinks a line should be drawn and whether he now regards some of his most celebrated work as existing somewhere on the other side of it. Spade_Cooley 9,513 Posted October 19, 2010 So today's storm-in-a-Twatter is over Duncan Bannatyne threatening to sue one Twitter user over her making a joke about him fucking Deborah Meaden. Story can be found here. Some would say the faux-hardman Jock is being needlessly thin-skinned over this, others would say that Duncan has the right to get rid of things he feels could upset his friends and family from the internet. Anyway, who made the joke? None other than @sharongooner, who, if you go back to page one of this thread, was Quantock's main cheerleader in the "HOW DARE THESE PEOPLE SAY SUCH UPSETTING THIGNS ABOUT CELEBRITIES" stakes.
