Virginia McLaurin, aka "woman who danced with Obama" turned 111 last month, in seemingly fine form

https://wjla.com/news/local/dcs-virginia-mclaurin-is-celebrating-her-111th-birthday

The public records show she was born in 1917. I think gerontologists everywhere are scratching their head and wondering why the media have fallen for this without verifying her claims first.

Not that the media care about the truth of course, they just want a story.

Sharadchandra Shankar Shrikhande, Indian mathematician, dead at 102.

Blog post. The way mathematicians are covered by the media, he'll be lucky to do better than that.

He's one for me in the ABC pool if he QOs. That middle 'S' is gotta be worth a bundle, right?

Wikipedia still has him as alive.  Are we really sure he is dead? I can't find anything substantial.

A maths blog was the original source, not Wikipedia. Likely true, it just can't be used as a source on Wikipedia because it isn't considered reliable many of the editors there live in the Stone Age. [citation needed]

Two long-term residents of the living centenarians list on Wikipedia who died a few months back off our radar:

Leonidas Veliaroutis, Greek writer, died on 17th March aged 103.

James George, Canadian diplomat, died on 7th February aged 101.

Leonidas appears to have died off everyones radar - I did a check on 1916 names when Erdman died and he was still "alive" in the usual suspects!
