Interesting one, death notice for Hugh Lowther, 8th Earl of Lonsdalehttp://announcements.telegraph.co.uk/deaths/250496/lowther

As his adopted son was born by artificial insemination, that son apparently cannot inherit the title.

Nobs and their rules, eh?

The artificial insemination part isn’t relevant. The fact that the sperm used wasn’t his own is. With aristocratic titles, the entire tradition is built around maintaining a clear bloodline.

Disgusting establishment practice.

Hope his son gets all the assets and the inheritor just gets the title and nothing else.

You know, I feel we are always late to the party with this thread. So why not have one of my world famous lists? If you are looking for a nob or two around Christmas to fill out your DDP package, it might do to consider some of these. Why have diamonds and pearls when you can have Dukes, Marquesses and Earls?

I've gone for those over 80 currently or who will be over 80 in 2019.  In order of seniority. Wiki is my friend here, any errors are theirs not mine.

Most recent photos I could find of the oldest from those lists, the 11th Earl of Elgin (97).

In 2014 (interviewed about the Scottish independence referendum as he’s the current “Robert the Bruce” technically):

Nicolas Rea, 3rd Baron Rea, died on Monday aged 91 according to the UK Parliament site.

Before taking an active role in the House, he was an Army doctor, serving in Nigeria before becoming a GP in north London.

A hereditary peer, he first sat in the House of Lords in 1982 and was elected to remain in 1999 when the reforms came in.

His death means that The 3rd Viscount Simon, 79, is the last Labour hereditary elected to stay in 1999 still living.

I think I'm right in saying that there is no heir so this title now becomes extinct?

There will have to be a Labour peers by-election to replace him. Be interesting to see who they put up.

Probably should mention she was the daughter and last surviving child of fascist supporting Patrick Boyle, 8th Earl of Glasgow. A particularly nasty piece of work.

Weird to think his grandson, the current Earl of Glasgow is a Lib Dem peer.

Sir Keith Skinner, 4th Baronet, aged 93 Death Notice: http://announcements.telegraph.co.uk/deaths/253165/skinner

They are all called Thomas (after the first baronet) but they don't seem to use the name, even the heir is James rather than Thomas.

Instructional in the ways of the aristos, the baronetcy relates to a fucking street in Chelsea. Yes, m'lord, until he's 3 blocks away. ;)

So many elderly aristocrats dying.

Surely it can't be long before either nongenarian David Ogilvy the Earl of Airlie or 101 year old The Dowager Duchess of Grafton  brings me some success...

This post feels a bit like some Mystic  Meg style  foreshadowing  now...!

I wonder if the same fate will soon meet   David Ogilvy  The Earl of Airlie who also used to work for the Queen  and is the brother in law of Princess Alexandra.
