Getting rid of SV for FPTP has saved many Tory Police and Crime commissioners. If those elections still had SV a few more might have lost such as Cambridgeshire.
RoverAndOut 4,746 Posted May 4 If he wins this, Andy Street has been saved only by the pro-Gaza Independent. EDIT: In his next update, Chris Mason has said Street is currently close, but behind.
AstroKat 531 Posted May 4 With the Coventry result in, the running total is: Street - Con - 205484 Parker - Lab - 194029 Yakoob - Ind - 62595 So Labour need 11456 votes more than the Tories in the yet to be declared Sandwell.
RoverAndOut 4,746 Posted May 4 John Curtice suspects Labour may have done enough... (For the record, he said they needed a 5.45% swing in both Coventry and Sandwell to overtake Street - 6.1% in Coventry).
RoverAndOut 4,746 Posted May 4 In the local elections in the area, Sandwell elected 5 new Labour councillors and ejected 6 existing Tory councillors. Some might have lent their votes to Street, but the maths look good...
TQR 14,387 Posted May 4 Labour have done it. EDIT: Sorry, that looked quite flat. I’ll try again. Labour have done it!!!!

Brad252 807 Posted May 4 The Tories' ratings are so low, even Gove's withdrawal symptoms look like he's still high.

Sly Ronnie 879 Posted May 4 Apparently the "Gaza" candidate for the West Midlands, Akhmed Yakoob won over 40K votes, so Labour would have won more comfortably.

Not including the votes from Sandwell, Yakoob has 62595 votes, almost 43K from Birmingham alone. It's entirely possible that without him in the mix we wouldn't still be waiting for the Sandwell result (66K voters). This should have been a cake walk for Labour. TQR 14,387 Posted May 4 Labour’s winning margin was 1,508 votes. As Ronnie said, could’ve been much bigger were it not for the Gaza candidate.
RoverAndOut 4,746 Posted May 4 Well, that was exciting! According to Nick Eardley (BBC political correspondent), a text to a source close to the Tory rebels has responded "We're still in the pub", suggesting this won't change their failure to move against Sunak. Seems to be "let him hang himself" is the order of the day.

TQR 14,387 Posted May 4 So, just to recap LE2024: - The worst case scenario for the Tories was to lose 436 councillors (as proportionally bad as 1996), they lost 473 with one council to go and came third behind the Lib Dems. - They wanted and convinced themselves they could secure Street and Hall mayoralties, and they barely scraped Houchen whose majority shrank by around 20 points. - They suffered the third-worst swing away from them since the war in the Blackpool South by-election. - Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha 1
TQR 14,387 Posted May 4 Good speech from Richard Parker and gentlemanly behaviour all round actually: Andy Street was every bit as graceful in his defeat as Susan Hall wasn’t, and both had warm words for each other. Rare to see actual decency between political opponents of late.
