Sir Creep 7,070 Posted July 12, 2017 Maine philanthropist and former Dexter Shoe Co. executive Peter Alfond died Monday from malaria contracted during a recent trip to Africa, according to news accounts and his family's foundation. He was 65. A scion of one of Maine’s best-known families, Alfond contracted the disease while traveling with his family. Alfond for many years supported educational and healthcare causes through the Peter Alfond Foundaiton — including the donation of $4 million to MaineGeneral Medial Center, to establish the Healthy Living Resource Center, which encourages healthier eating and exercise. The Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation has supported non-profits focused on art, children and other areas. Grant recipients include the Arizona Community Foundation, Children First Leadership Academy of Phoenix, Ballet Arizona, the Art Institute of Chicago and various educational institutions. Sir Creep 7,070 Posted February 4, 2019 Millard Fuller, 74, a self-made millionaire who gave away his wealth to start the Christian house-building group Habitat for Humanity and who later started a similar organization after he was fired over disputes with the Habitat board, died Feb. 3 en route to a hospital in Albany, Georgia. An autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death. Habitat for Humanity, founded in 1976 and based in Americus, Georgia, built more than 175,000 houses in 100 countries under Fuller’s leadership and attracted prominent volunteers, including former President Jimmy Carter.
