Maine philanthropist and former Dexter Shoe Co. executive Peter Alfond died Monday from malaria contracted during a recent trip to Africa, according to news accounts and his family's foundation.  He was 65.

A scion of one of Maine’s best-known families, Alfond contracted the disease while traveling with his family.

Alfond for many years supported educational and healthcare causes through the Peter Alfond Foundaiton — including the donation of $4 million to MaineGeneral Medial Center, to establish the Healthy Living Resource Center, which encourages healthier eating and exercise.

What luck, donates $$$ to a medical center and dies from some half-ass disease in a place that doesn't have one.

Bruce T. Halle, the founder of Discount Tire, Arizona's wealthiest resident and a prominent philanthropist, died Thursday morning at age 87.  Halle was listed as Arizona's wealthiest individual for the past eight years by Forbes, with a net worth of $5.2 billion.  The Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation has supported non-profits focused on art, children and other areas. Grant recipients include the Arizona Community Foundation, Children First Leadership Academy of Phoenix, Ballet Arizona, the Art Institute of Chicago and various educational institutions.

He was a 1956 graduate of Eastern Michigan University. Halle earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the university and founded the company in Ann Arbor with six tires. 
A library at Eastern Michigan bears Halle's name. He also received an honorary doctorate degree from the university and delivered the commencement speech there in 1995.

SIR CREEP is also a graduate of Eastern Michigan Univ (1987 - Geology).

Wealthiest Utahan for many years.  Hope he got rid of his cash.  About to be put to the obit test -- I would think he passes.
Hard to tell but I'm guessing it's complications of prostate C, though he had that a few years ago.... ?

St. Paul’s low-key, high-stakes philanthropist, John Nasseff — who started at West Publishing toiling in boxcars and later became its only top executive without a college degree — died at his St. Paul home Wednesday evening, just hours before his 94th birthday.   

At United Hospital, his donations helped build the John Nasseff Heart Center, the Nasseff Specialty Center, the John Nasseff Neuroscience Specialty Clinic and the Milton M. Hurwitz ExerCare Fitness Center.  He also built a dental clinic in his mother’s home village in Lebanon, donated money to orphanages in several countries, helped with the expansion of St. Maron’s (Maronite) Catholic Church in Minneapolis, contributed to the St. Paul police and fire departments, the Mayo Clinic and more.

Betty Schoenbaum, a prolific philanthropist and widow of Shoney’s restaurant chain’s founder Alex Schoenbaum, has died.  She was 100.  Among other philanthropic endeavours, in 2002, Betty Schoenbaum pledged $2.5 million to Ohio State to create an early childhood development center.

Millard Fuller, 74, a self-made millionaire who gave away his wealth to start the Christian house-building group Habitat for Humanity and who later started a similar organization after he was fired over disputes with the Habitat board, died Feb. 3 en route to a hospital in Albany, Georgia.  An autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death.

Habitat for Humanity, founded in 1976 and based in Americus, Georgia, built more than 175,000 houses in 100 countries under Fuller’s leadership and attracted prominent volunteers, including former President Jimmy Carter. The Fuller Center for Housing, founded in 2005, raises money for Habitat affiliates.
