One of the biggest names in my hometown of Detroit, Alfred Taubman has died.

 

"A. Alfred Taubman's self-made wealth as a pioneer who helped revolutionize how America shops fueled a lifetime of varied philanthropy and support for civic institution and the arts, including his deep commitment to the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Taubman, the Pontiac native who helped bring malls to America and who became one of Michigan's most important donors to museums and universities, died Friday of a heart attack in his home in Bloomfield Hills, said Christopher Tennyson of the Office of A. Alfred Taubman. He was 91."

 

He once owned Sotheby's auction house.

Jon Huntsman Sr., big player in Utah politics and father of former Utah governor and presidential candidate Jon Huntsman Jr., as well as being a huge philantropist and funder of cancer research, 'wants to give all his money away before he dies'. He has already beaten the prognosis of 'polymyalgia rheumatic' by a couple of years.

John Petersen, who gave $10M to help build the basketball arena at the University of Pittsburgh--and thus the building bears his name--has died at 86 after battling cancer. He and his wife have also given millions to the science school and for nanotechnology research and Olympic training facilities on campus.

Of less dubious note, he also has the same name as my ex-brother-in-law.

Joanna Winship Crawford is dead at 89:

Bruce B. Dayton, the last of the five brothers whose retailing empire included Dayton-Hudson department stores, some of the nation’s first enclosed shopping malls and the Target discount chain, died on Friday at his home in Orono, Minn., near Minneapolis. He was 97.

Bruce Dayton and his wife provided more than $80 million in capital, endowment and acquisition funds and more than 2,000 works of art to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, now the Minneapolis Institute of Art. He served on the institute’s board for 73 years.
