Isn’t it more likely they genuinely built up that follower count, then simply wiped all their own tweets, then changed their display pic, handle and screen name? Unsurprisingly, they're still utterly relevant today - 40+ years later. Nice Work and Small World are decent reads, even if you've never worked in the system.
