Former King Crimson bassist John Wetton has died after a long battle with cancer to give The Crowdsourced Deathlist it's third hit of the year. A respected singer/songwriter, Wetton also performed with Asia, Uriah Heep and Roxy Music. His ominous mentions of metastatic cancer on his blog were picked up by eagle-eyed Forumites who ensured he made his debut on this years list, aged 67. With three hits in the first month of the year, it has been a fast start for the 2nd Crowdsourced Deathlist.

Rugby legend Joost van der Westhuizen has died after a long battle with ALS to give The Crowdsourced Deathlist another success. Van der Westhuizen was part of the South African team which won the Rugby World Cup in 1995, events which were viewed as the re-birth of post apartheid South Africa as a sporting nation, and which were transformed into films like Invictus. He played in three rugby world cups, but became known for his off the field antics until health problems multiplied in the last decade. Thereafter, he formed the J9 Foundation, for researching motor neurone diseases. He has died at the age of 45, and was in 20th place on the list.

Long time Archers actress Sara Coward has died aged 69 to give The Crowdsourced Deathlist another success. A regarded stage actress, Coward made her debut on the very long running BBC radio drama in 1977, as Caroline Sterling, and remained until 2016. She asked the BBC to keep her character running after her death, but the Grim Reaper appears to have decided to axe the long running actress from the daily soap opera called life. This was Sara Coward's first appearance on The Crowdsourced Deathlist, which has raked up five hits in the first seven weeks of the year, in a barnstorming performance so far.

Former singer-songwriter Peter Skellern has died to give The Crowdsourced Deathlist another success. Skellern had a UK Number 3 hit in 1972 with You're a Lady, and was looking good to be a unique hit on the Derby Deadpool for Spade Cooley, until news of the singers imminent demise reached the newspapers in late 2016. There's nothing The Crowdsourced Deathlist likes more than a hot tip, and so Peter Skellern made his list debut at spot number 42. He was 69, and continues the fine vein of form The 2017 Crowdsourced Deathlist finds itself in, with six hits by mid-February cementing the fine quality of the picks selected so far.

British politician Sir Gerald Kaufman has died to give The Crowdsourced Deathlist another success. A leading student politician in the 1950s, Kaufman became a confidant of the future PM Harold Wilson, and later a sketch writer for TV satirical show That Was The Week That Was, before he won election as the Labour MP for Manchester Ardwick in 1970. Whilst a junior minister in the Callaghan government, he was better known for being a prominent member of Neil Kinnock's Shadow Cabinet throughout the 1980s, famously dubbing the 1983 Labour election manifesto "the longest suicide note in history". He later became a respected if caustic, and outspoken if sometimes controversial backbench MP, and in 2015 became the Father of the House of Commons. In 1962, Gerald Kaufman wrote the famous T3 sketch, The Silent Men of Westminster, and later went onto emulate it in the last year of his life. Kaufman was 86, having spent forty-seven years at Westminster, and making his debut on The Crowdsourced Deathlist.

The great British character actor, Geoffrey Bayldon, has died at the age of 93 to give The Crowdsourced Deathlist its eighth hit of the year. Bayldon, who died after a long illness, was best known to TV audiences as Catweazle, a popular TV show from the 1970s about a time traveling magician which conjured the hearts of the nations children. He was much in demand over the course of a career spanning seven decades, at home in school education programmes and Amicus horror films alike. He also turned down the role of Doctor Who in 1963. Other roles include Casino Royale, The House That Dripped Blood, and obligatory roles in The Avengers and Tales of the Unexpected.

 

Some Crowdsourced Deathlist hits bring with them melancholy, but not to worry, someone like Ian Brady will die soon to redress the balance...

Much beloved children's entertainer, John Noakes, has died after a long illness to give The Crowdsourced Deathlist its 10th hit of 2017. Noakes was a familiar face on British TV throughout the 1960s and 1970s, as one of the longest serving presenters on Blue Peter. He was credited with bringing a more daring, boys own adventure style to the series, climbing to the top of Nelson's Column on one occasion, and free-fall parachuting with the RAF on another. He was also well known for his association with the dog Shep (part pet/part trained assassin), appearing in a number of children's shows together until the dog died in 1987. Noakes, aged 83,  had been in poor health for a number of years, and appeared at Number 39 on his second appearance in The Crowdsourced Deathlist.
