Herman wasn't bad I'll grant but it never had the edge of the Addams family. Obviously though, I was wrong to call the Munsters a pale immitation if it was contemporaneous. I felt the same way, incidentally, about the Beano and Dandy. The Beano was always the superior product.

It's not so much the first aired date that's important, as when they started production. Could be that the Munsters team had the idea first, then the producer defected, or someone leaked the idea, and the Addams team were faster at getting the programme out. This info would most likely be much harder to obtain. Pilot episodes?

But the Addams family was based on cartoon strip, that had been around for some time, before it was turned into TV.

 

What was the Munsters based on? Were they also originally a cartoon strip?

Most sitcoms were written way before there television time probobly

in the 1800's but i'm guessing the Munsters was not.

Anyone who says Al Lewis isn't famous enough is too young to know how famous he is. I love Al. Grandpa Munster became famous in the 60's, and continued on through Munsters reruns. Not only that, but Al himself made regular appearances on many television shows, including the Howard Stern show. He's was a riot. There's another side, too. Al is quite versed in history and has views people should hear. He also has a radio show, "Al Lewis Live' beaming out of NYC, but he hasn't been heard from since, I guess, around April 2005. I, truly, love Al. You have to hear him speak to understand.

We still haven't addressed the BIG issue although a trawl through previous deathlists seems to have sorted it for me. As of now Al Lewis is the only unidexter - ie he's lost a leg - to appear in our top 50. A remarkable achievement and a fitting finale to a remarkable life. In fact, most of the top 50 in every year are notable for having fully intact bodies. Though several have lost their minds by the time they hit our lists.

No, the big issue is that when Tony Blair steps down we're going to have a Prime Minister - Gordon Brown - who has only got one eye!!

well i'm pleased that john astin's alive - maybe he's feeling a bit poorly and can be added to the list? - i was sure some malicious swine told me he was dead. although his career was after 'return of the killer tomatoes'.

 

al lewis - i'm on topic, see - has to be a good bet for this year. the real sign will be if the poor bugger has a stroke. i had an uncle who was a unidexter, and he had a stroke that affected him down the side where he HAD a leg. gone in less than a year. and honest, i'm not making this up.

i've just filled out my on line form thingy and am awaiting the confirmation email thingy. i don't understand pc's at all, they're just big typewriters. with pictures. most of which are rude, if most of what i see on the net is true. so yes, i am registering. although having just looked in at the dickie o thread and how 'serious' some people are being i'm having doubts.

so, al lewis... the age thing is really interesting, as in Car 54 and Munsters re-runs he looks about sixty (ok, so it was make-up in the Munsters) but not the age he should have been if born in the twenties (around late thirties, forty). he LOOKED like he was born in 1910, so could it have been this that prompted him adding years to his age? like moore marriott playing toothless old men when he was still in his suave forties? to get the roles he LOOKED suited for, he did a bit of creative accounting.

Welcome to the funny farm Pulphack. An interesting theory, film stars are known for faking their ages, although usually saying they're younger than they are. Still whatever his age he's not in great shape with one foot in the grave.
