It was written for the advert, a bank I believe, and only the first verse maybe.

Artiste added the other verses I think.

Sounds like the kind of thing Bowie was up to in the late 70s/early 80s.

A TV-inspired Christmas song, from the 60s, sung by a British band who had the same name as a more famous (and later) US band.

Crikey, I've been through the Outlaws, the Highwaymen, the Shadows (sometime known as the Drifters) and even the Knack, and can't find anything remotely Christmassy.

Maybe I should concentrate more on Christmas, than the band?

There's the UK band The Eagles and all, but mostly instrumental stuff.

Associated with Ron Grainer, which would tie in, but I'm damned if I can find anything Dr Who/Christmas related by them.

You’re on the right track. Nothing to do with Ron Grainer, but definitely Doctor Who related. ( not the Eagles btw)

Brava. That was indeed it.

A song and a band I was completely unaware of a week ago!

Yes, I have no recollection of it either.  I thought I vaguely remembered something called 'All I Want For Christmas Is A Dalek' but I must have confused it with something else.

Anyway

Connect T. Rex to David Gray in six-degrees-of-separation style.  Two songs should crop up along the way.

You've omitted to name the two songs though, which is the point, really.

In case this wasn't twigged, I thought Rainbow Chaser was the first Brit single to use phasing all through it.

Can't mind if that was what Dr Who theme was technically called, and couldn't figure out a Xmas connection.

But, they were big enough for Salvador Dali to throw paint over them Live on French telly performing it.

Might have been at Xmas.
