Is Dougie (Douglas) his real name or stage name? Because only one of them was born in Pollok in that time period and it's Douglas Henderson born 1950.

Hmm. Would that presume that Henderson was born at home? Our man went to school in Pollok. That would mean lying about his age when he was with The Marmalade!

Info definitely suggests he was with The Poets circa 1967-71 and to my knowledge that group only appeared once on TOTP in 1964.

Possibly more likely he was born in one of the major maternity hospitals in Glasgow, Rottenrow or Queen Mother? Is there a record of a Douglas Henderson born later around the 1952-54 period? Not exactly an uncommon name, unfortunately.

Henderson - 74, 000  possibilities

Male - cuts it down to 37, 000

Glasgow -  6, 800

time period of 1948-55 - 311

Doug(las) - 9

The other option is Neil Douglas Henderson born 1955, but in Partick - but the maternity unit wasn't open yet there so unlikely to have a kid from Pollok. That'd' be Rottenrow, but that was more middle class folk in the 50s (and I didn't assume home birth, it was the lack of Hendersons for the time period which brought up Pollok)

Given this is him in The Poets, I don't think hes 14 or under:

Dougie%20Henderson.jpg

Also this is him *allegedly* during the 1978 World Cup - looks pushing 30 at least, unless he aged *very badly* which makes me suspect the "17 on TOTP" is a bit of a myth.

Well, this is definitely him on FB: https://en-gb.facebook.com/douglas.henderson.94

We have a DOB if not the year, but 1950 is looking good - although looking at the recent pics he doesn't look 70. Maybe there's more info @Ulitzer95? I'm sure @msc is probably right, but do we have to wait until he's dead to confirm? :D

And in fact if I'd just scrolled right down to the bottom of his FB page, he has a "Born in 1950"  as part of his Other Favourites.

We've bloody nailed him, and thanks @msc!

To double check for you, no Doug(las) Henderson were born at Rottenrow (they'd be under Martha St registrations) from 1945-60.

Of the 9 possibles, 8 are born 1950-1, and the 9th one is your 1955 guy above who'd be 13 in that photo. And given he went to school in Crookston (in Pollok) I'm fairly confident in ruling out about 5 or 6 of the others born in Provan or Springburn, so yeah, I think its your 1950 man fwitw...

Guys, thank you. This is great research.

YW... I’ve added that birth date for Newman but stopped short of putting an estimated year in. There’s contradicting evidence out there. On the Marmalade website it says he was 14 when he joined his first band in the early 60s. Then there’s this... the only Alexander Newman born around that period seems to be born in ‘47. I can’t seem to find anything online that links him to Aberdeen or even says where he originated from.

So, Medicine Head

Both of those two still alive and John Fiddler maintains the name and records/performs under it

However, the final hit single is the band as a five piece incl. the now deceased George Ford (bass) and Roger Saunders (lead guitar) both of whom I'm fairly sure were mentioned hereabouts on death. Ford for sure because he was also in Cockney Rebel. Drummer in the five piece hit making Medicine Head was Rob Townsend, newly freed at the time by the disbanded Family and eventually to join the Blues Band which - I'm fairly sure - is where he still thumps the tubs

Merton Parkas.

Date of Birth here for Simon Smith: https://www.oldies.com/artist-biography/Mood-Six.html

Various sources confirm Neil Hurrell is dead: http://bmodrevivalforums.runboard.com/t11710 and this interview with Mick Talbot from 2009 says he died "a few years ago" https://sexygroovyrhythms.wordpress.com/tag/mods/ so probably some time in the 2000s.

Not sure how this thread works as I don't generally read it, but someone like, say, Nicky Tesco tweets regularly - does that count as being alive?

It should do.  :D  I expect they'll get round to it.

The Wiki page for the band gives quite a lot of detail, including a real name for Tesco of Nick Lightowlers.  Not too many of them about, but I don't see a Nicholas.

This one might be worth consideration:

Very unlikely as Tesco himself says he went to Liverpool University in 1972.

Been reading up on them, possible Tesco might not even have been born in the UK as his dad was in the RAF and "they travelled around a lot", though he grew up in as Tesco describes it the "shithole" that was Camberley in Surrey.

There's quite a bit out there on Nigel Bennett, just not much in the way of bio. Chris Payne similar though less I can find.

Edit: Nigel's FB page doesn't give much away, here's his seemingly abandoned Twitter: https://twitter.com/NigelBennettGTR

Max Webster.

Interesting article here: grass_co_beatles_40.jpg

So in May 1967, David Myles was already 15, older than Kim Mitchell, so born probably 1951/52 (more likely the latter). Might be of some help.

@maryportfuncity Cheers! I did read that at one point they were actually a group but I didn't spot that this had been the case for the last record. I've added the other three members and expanded the notes slightly.

@harrymcnallysblueandwhitearmy I did see the Twitter account earlier, sadly nothing on there about when he was born. By default, anyone in black type is alive or assumed to be alive. Everyone who is confirmed dead or aged 90+ with no evidence of being alive is marked in red. Cheers!

Added DOB for Smith.

Just managed to find the full DOB and DOD for Hurrell (I was between two ppl of the same name for his birth earlier in the GRO but the death in the 2000s allowed me to find this record and match the middle initial "L" to his birth record). Died on the Millennium – poor guy!

Cheers!

There is also a Kevin Lightowlers on there from the surrounding area which could be him but again, nothing concrete to go on.

Can't find any indication anywhere of an alternate first name. @YoungWillz could be right in suggesting he was born abroad. One to shelf for now I think.

Sadly the Canadian records are very limited on Ancestry. If anyone is reading this and knows where I can access them all for free, please speak up.

I will look further into We The People Band tomorrow, cheers again.

Mr Big.

John Lewis Burnip FB page: https://www.facebook.com/john.l.burnip seems to come from Washington, Tyne and Wear and has emigrated to Australia since 2006 - I've tracked down that he seems to be a resident of Corindi Beach, Coffs Harbour, New South Wales.

Peter Crowther now runs a cello shop in Witney, Oxfordshire https://www.petercrowthercellos.org/ based on this:

Little on Eddie Carter - still performing with a band called Sunfly.

  • Thanks 1
