Arlene Martell is harder. She seems to have released a couple of records in the early 1960s and also sung with Glenn Miller (Moonlight Serenaders) so that would make her older than the two younger ones found. Can't find anything on her origins though.

In the obit for Helen Miles (1919–2012) on Legacy, the Helen Miles Singers are not mentioned. I'm therefore skeptical about adding these details in. It's possible IMDb have muddled up two people with the same name in the way that they did for Martell. What's certain is that the two did perform together in the Helen Miles Singers.

Martell is still alive on Facebook. It says she was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Currently lives in New York City and her husband is Neil. I would say she's in her 80s. That isn't in line with Helen's birth year of 1919, so I'm reluctant to punch it in. Likewise, little to nothing catching my attention on Ancestry. I guess we'll have to wait.

It doesn't specifically mention the Helen Miles Singers.

 

It does however tie in with the first article I posted from 1991 which specifies her being in the Singers due to the tie in with Teaneck and the Ethel Merman story. It all knits together, definitely her.

I've found her on Ancestry.

Arlene Faye Neubauer. It doesn't have a full date sadly, just says born c. 1937 in Pennsylvania (which makes sense as her mum had Philadelphia links according to her obit). She then went to school in Indianapolis.

Edit: Married NEIL Michel Martin in 1966 in Indianapolis. And now I've just found them on Clustrmaps still living together in NYC. He was born 24 Aug 1932 (which matches his NY birth record on Ancestry). She was born 02 Apr 1937. Another act complete @YoungWillz!

I think there is quite the number of deaths from the 80s! I'm working on 1988 just now for future DDP teams and it's quite good just to skip Prince, George Michael, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, etc etc. Keeps me from an extra 20 minutes for each month I'm doing.

 

As I mentioned previously, the 80s are effectively a nightmare. The prevalence of sampling and studio productions just goes up and up, same with session singers and performing artists. And in the early days, the rules really hadn't been challenged on sampling, so do you credit the performers on the original from which the sample is taken?

 

The you have the charity singles, the football singles, the one hit wonders, the bands who made one album, but invited a ton of folk onto it, etc etc. I know you've had some of these issues but hell! And you've had the advantage of a reference book!

 

Anyway, well done for ploughing through this.

Well I'm not saying never. I might give it a go next year. I just think that so many of them are still "young". I mean if you look at all of the acts of Stock Aitken Waterman for example, I think there are maybe 3 names who are dead?

As for sampling... is it really that hard to tackle when writing lineups? I would just ignore the sample, and focus on the title artist. E.g. with Kon Kan and I Beg Your Pardon, surely you'd just list the two guys from the production duo itself and not Lynn Anderson who's sampled?

Well I'm not saying never. I might give it a go next year. I just think that so many of them are still "young". I mean if you look at all of the acts of Stock Aitken Waterman for example, I think there are maybe 3 names who are dead?

As for sampling... is it really that hard to tackle when writing lineups? I would just ignore the sample, and focus on the title artist. E.g. with Kon Kan and I Beg Your Pardon, surely you'd just list the two guys from the production duo itself and not Lynn Anderson who's sampled?

Just listened to the sequence on YouTube. Got to admit, genuinely never heard it before today but I see it was popular on 80s hip-hop records and still sampled on a some tracks today.

Did you research the 80s top 30 then? Any surprises along the way e.g. people who didn't know had passed?
