Born in Rawalpindi in what was then British India, he emigrated to the UK in 1956, becoming a bus conductor in Bradford; he opened his first shop, Kashmir, in Earl's Court in 1963, specialising Asian spices and halal meat, and within a decade had expanded to 10 stores, renamed Bestway, with a wholesale warehouse following soon after.
